On Monday morning I made it out to the garden at 6:15AM and got started on the calendula bed. I’d finished Row 6 by 9:30AM.
These are the plants in this row and notes:
Yellow Toothache Plant: I grow this every year and yes, it really does work on relatively severe toothaches. I like its funny flowers that look like eyeballs.
Stevia: I originally wasn’t going to grow this outside, but the 2 that came up ended up in the cold frame. I put the best one in the garden and figure I’ll bring the other inside later on. This is the first year I’ve tried to grow it.
Lady’s Mantle: This is another plant that has been here since 1992. It’s done extremely well in the New Herb garden.
Resina Calendula: I grow the Resina variety because I use it in salves, etc. I prefer the orange flowers but they aren’t as prolific as the yellow.
Salad Burnet: This plant doesn’t winter over so I grow it every other year or so.
Chives: These are another old timer plant from 1992. They get nice and big and have a delightful flavor.
Hyssop: This is the other one of this plant, the one that has done very well.
Balsam: I put more balsam along one edge of the hyssop just to have flowers in this area.
Thyme: I grow the German thyme as it is the closest one to surviving in my Zone 4a. About half of it survived this last winter and I put in 10 more plants.
I moved onto Row 7. The first thing I had to do was tie up the chamomile that had wintered over. This is the first time this has ever happened. Once I had the 18 plants in, I had to go to the barn to see if I could find softer hay bales to put around these delicate plants. I found 3.
I only had chamomile and lavender to plant in this row as all the rest are hardy perennials. I finished about 11:30AM and had to rake the walkways as I’d made an awful mess with the hay. Then I got cleaned up and got my photos. I’d also sorted out the cold frame, putting the extra plants on one side and the ones yet to be planted on the other. I was finally done by 12:15PM.
Here’s the plants in Row 7 and notes:
German Chamomile: As I said, some had wintered over and gotten quite large so I tied them up. Most of the flowers had gone by.
Lupine: This plant is the first one ever to survive more than 2 years here. It seems to be quite content there.
Oregano: This plant grows out of control every year. My general helper has already hacked at it so she could transfer some to her garden.
Garlic Chives: These have done well here. The hardest thing about them is deadheading before the seeds fall.
Munsted Lavender: This variety is supposed to be hardy here, but has never survived a winter. I put some in this garden and save 3 more to put in flowerbeds.
Marjoram: This relative of oregano has an ongoing competition with the oregano to see who can take over the garden the fastest.
Yarrow: I ran out of amendment on the marjoram so the yarrow won’t get any this year. I doubt it will faze it at all.
So this project is done, except for the walkways. Now I can move onto flowerbeds and dehydrating, etc.
I got in the house to get a shower and realized I had half an hour to get a shower and get ready to go to an event at the Senior Center. So I was racing around getting ready for that and the van never came. I called to find out what was happening and the event had been cancelled due to laryngitis.
So I spent the afternoon editing photos and writing posts.
