On Thursday morning, I was up by 6AM but moving slowly. I got the post up and the cat fed and then started on the seedlings. Lots of the tomatoes were up and only the Kapija peppers. No bell peppers or paprika yet.
Some of the restarts were up too. I intended to water them, but just couldn’t do more standing.
So I went and collected all the stuff I’d need and sat down to draw neatly the cellar maps for the inventory. I got the 2 we’d done so far done and was sick of it, so I went and sat down with my feet up for a while.
Magnolia garden - violets
I’d planned to get up just before noon and get ready and collect all the stuff we’d need for planting the Big garden and get it out there. I keep forgetting my helper friend arrives early on Thursday and he saw the note about moving the armoire in the office back into position now the plant stands are gone. So we got that done and I went out to do what I’d planned.
We decided that clearing the area above left, would be the best plan. So we set about doing that.
Next we were going to get all the mesclun planted, even the #3 starting that was inside. The #1 starting had had several haircuts before it was planted. #2 starting never had one so it’s really big. And #3 was just started on April 15th so they were still small. My helper friend did the planting while I moved mulch and laid out and amended and broadforked the 3rd mesclun bed.
We didn’t have quite enough to plant both the beds. Next I mulched them all while my helper friend brought me the mulch I needed.
This 3rd bed would have seed broadcast on it. There were 2 small rows of carrots between the beds and we got them planted and mulched. The boards will keep the soil moist until they come up.
The celery is doing well so far, nothing has eaten it yet.
Many of the comfrey have migrated out of the bed. They will have to be put back in soon, and the rest will go to the Little Trees II row.
We tidied up the cleared area and he started to put stuff away while I seeded the third mesclun bed. He brought out a bag of seed starting mix to cover the seed. The soil is so wet, I couldn’t use that.
Once that was done, I got my photos and notes and I was more than finished. I sent him off to do errands while I got a shower and rested.
, the rhubarb is recovering well! And as usual, we’ll have no shortage of horseradish.
My helper friend noticed the chokeberries were flowering when we were working in the Big garden, so I had to get photos. The westerly one is twice the size of the easterly one. And the Reliance peach is covered with baby peaches and no sign so far of the curly leaf disease.
Small garden – garlic doing well, so far…
On Friday, I’m not planning on moving too fast. I have to clean up the disaster of a kitchen, water the seedlings, put away the big shopping my helper friend will do, and try to not forget the Azure delivery mid afternoon.
It will be the 38th wedding anniversary also, and I’ve been struggling with getting through it. It doesn’t help it’s been raining so much and will be all day Friday and up until Saturday noon. But it will pass and the sun will be out on Sunday and I will be busy then.
