On Wednesday I was up before 5AM and got my post up. I got the kitchen cleaned up and the laundry put away. This was all the rain we got on Tuesday so I planned to run the hoses and set up the sprinklers.
My #3 intern arrived with his dad, Tom, at 8AM and just as we were getting our bug spray on, the mulch hay guy arrived early. So we got the truck unloaded into the barn and I had the hay guy bring the tobacco netting to the house.
Tom had gotten me 64’ of it and I’d had him put it in the barn until I could get to it. We managed to get it all on the line and then sprayed it down with water as best we could. Tom said it had a lot of dust or something in it that made him cough.
I’d written down in the past what hoses work well together i.e. don’t leak, and so going by that we pulled hoses out of the garden shed. I’d blown up 2 hoses last year and so the old list was no longer accurate.
We did the Small garden first as it was nearby and easy. We had all the hoses for that and the sprinkler actually worked. I left it running while we sorted out the Big garden.
I’d gotten 2 black hoses somewhere and wasn’t sure if they were drip/spray hoses. So we tested one and it was a regular hose.
The listed hose for the Big garden broke when we hooked it to the faucet. It was a very old hose, so it went into the trash shed. We hooked up the black hose and it didn’t leak at either end so we moved onto getting the listed sprinkler going.
For some reason, the sweep was only about 15’ wide and the length 20’ and that was NOT going to work in the Big garden. I took it apart and messed with it but no joy.
So I pulled out a couple of spare sprinklers and the first one worked. We got it set up and moved onto the New Herb garden.
We tested the 2nd black hose and it was a regular hose, so I decided to replace the other very old hose with that at the New Herb garden. We got the hoses run and the sprinkler set up. It also worked properly.
But by then it was 10:30AM and the sun had come out even though a cloudy day was forecast. So I couldn’t run the sprinklers until the evening.
Once they had left around noon, I got a shower and rested the rest of the day. When my brother got home, the mechanic called soon after so we went and picked up the truck. My brother drove it home and said it’s got brakes! So that’s a job checked off.
In the evening I got so involved in a movie, I forgot to turn the sprinklers on.
On Thursday it’s supposed to rain but I plan to get the sprinklers going in the morning when I get up. I have to harvest all the peas then process them, so no garden work.
