On Wednesday I made it out to the Big garden to finish the weeding around 6:30AM. It was still pretty humid but cooler. There’s no carrots again this year. They had been doing fine when planted.
I just read a post on the Permaculture Guild in the morning about jumping worms eating tiny seedlings. I don’t direct plant much, just beans, carrots parsnips, and peas. Carrots and peas did really poorly this year. Hmmmm….
We weren’t anywhere careful enough when we dug the horseradish. There were small and medium plants all over its area. I pulled them out but I bet that doesn’t stop it.
The rhubarb is particularly bug eaten this summer. It’s not looking so good.
This is the zucchini squash. I pulled 2 huge ones off plus 2 nice size ones. Maybe zucchini bread-and-butter pickles…
A little farther down, the acorn squash has escaped.
The garlic is getting harvested on Thursday.
The new Little trees area had never been finished. I thought I’d get it weeded and see if I had the energy to bring up mulch.
I got the grass out but was too hot and tired by 9:30AM to start moving mulch. I’d probably have too much and should unload the truck and that would mean starting to weed the first Little trees. So I think I will next start the weeding on the first Little trees before moving mulch.
Around 4PM a load of mulch hay was delivered, 31 bales. Now I can resume work on the New Herb garden.
Larry has settled in well, spending most of the day downstairs. I was a bit worried he hadn’t seemed to have eaten or drunk since arriving on Monday afternoon. My neighbor had stopped over to see how he was doing and suggested trying tuna. I don’t feed “people” food and while I knew they love tuna, I’d not fed it.
So I got a can out and put a little in his dish. He did like it, but had an awful time chewing. They had wanted to check him out, especially for dental, before I brought him home, but when the eye needed treating and he wasn’t doing so well, they sent him home before the vet could see him.
He only managed a few bites. I put water in to make it easier, but he wanted no part of that. I had a lot of flavors of pate left from my old cat, so I got her favorite, Turkey and Giblets, and added some water. He said that was disgusting. I know many cats find the pates disgusting, except Dennis at the barn. So she will get this in the morning.
White rose starts have 2 leaf buds
I made an appointment for Friday afternoon for him to be seen by the vet. My neighbor will take me. I bet she’s ruing the day I decided to adopt Larry…
On Thursday I have my new helper at 6AM and we will be digging garlic first thing. Once that’s done, then we can sit in the shade to clean it up and bundle it to hang in the wood shed.
I have 2 appointments for MassHealth during that time so she will have to work on her own off and on. My helper friend arrives at 11:30 and he can get some done too.
