On Sunday morning I stayed in bed until 7AM, not realizing the time had changed, so it was to be 8AM. Someone was a LOT less than pleased with me! Once he was fed and dying wasn’t eminent, I started editing photos and got my post up.
Next I had a lot of onion seedlings to thin and the violas were up enough to move them to the south window under lights. Once this was all done, I watered them all.
I sat down for a while and my #1 intern said my general helper was coming to visit from Boston. So I got up and got a shower and sat down again. But it turns out she managed to get the car stuck in a snowbank and was going to be arriving much later. So I got up and made some lunch. Then I got a load into the dishwasher.
She finally arrived and we visited a little, then they went for a run and I decided to try to get something done in the 2 gardens that didn’t have snow.
So I collected my sleds and tools and camera and went to the front of the house. The New West garden had the least snow so I started there, back in the alcove.
These gardens never got cleaned out last fall and they were a mess. I kept finding “mulch” in them and then it dawned on me that the grass had been so high and thick, it had turned into mulch over the winter.
As I removed the leaves in the alcove, I found a lot of snowdrops up and one clump had flowers. Some of the plants had survived the weeds, the contractor walking on them to repair the porch, and the hard winter. I was delighted to see 3 of the 4 mums had tiny leaves at their bases.
I couldn’t get many of the grass roots out and didn’t try to get the tiny weeds that had started as the soil was still frozen in places. Mostly I just cleaned them up some.
In the South garden the snow had receded to the far side of the steps but it was still about a foot deep after that. There were some daffodils up near the steps.
Once the beds were sort of cleaned out, I got my photos and made my notes. The girls hadn’t come back from their run yet. When I went to go around the west side of the house to dump the 2 full sleds, I discovered the snow back there was up to 18” deep in places. Made walking and pulling sleds interesting…
Once back inside I sat down to watch ‘Lilies of the Field’ and after a while the girls got back and got showers. Then they went out for some lunch and when they got back, my general helper had to leave to return to Boston. I finished the movie and made some supper.
Sunset at ‘7PM’
I started another movie, ‘The Magic of Belle Isle’ and my #1 intern came down and watched part of it with me. But it was all pixilated at the end, so I must get a new copy.
I had lit the stoves at 6PM and the masonry heater hadn’t wanted to burn. I had to relight it and didn’t get to bed until 10:30PM.
On Monday I have exercise class, an event at the Senior Center, PT mid afternoon, and the estate transition class in the evening. I also need to get laundry done and clean up the kitchen. It’s to be a beautiful warm day and I would really love to be out in the gardens, but outside of the tiny Back Porch garden, they are all still half covered with snow. Sigh… Maybe on Tuesday if the 60’s temps melts more snow…
