East of Steps garden – the daffodils opened!
On Tuesday I was up at 5:45AM and got my post up. Then I cleaned up the kitchen disaster and sat down to start the paying bills/budget monthly ordeal. My helper friend arrived at 9:30AM and I sent him on a couple errands. When he got back he fed all the older seedlings and the houseplants. I spent the whole morning on bill paying, etc.
The white oak in the backyard drops lots of branches. We cleaned up the leaves in the autumn, but the trees along the driveway shed theirs and they blow into the yard. So by spring the backyard isn’t mowable for all the “cordwood” in it.
I like to try to get all the raking done before the grass grows much. In addition to the backyard, the areas around the driveway tend to get stones plowed into them. So my son rakes those out of the grass so I don’t hit them with the mower.
Finished!
On Tuesday afternoon my #2 intern arrived to help with the backyard raking. We had it all done by 2PM and as she was going inside, she mentioned she’d be leaving to go to college in 1½ hours in South Carolina! I was super grateful she’d take the time to come out here and help before a big trip like that! But it means I won’t have as much help any more. She assured me she’d come visit me when she comes back up north.
Now I just have to get the mowers and weedwacker in to the repair guy when he has an opening. Because of the deep mud in the driveway at the barn, I waited to call him until it dried out. That put me way down on the list. Sigh…

After all that raking, I was worn out. Two movies I ordered had come in so I watched those. It was pretty warm in the house in the evening and I decided to not light the masonry heater, even though it was to drop to upper 20’sF in the night. So I got the shades drawn and lit the wood stove, got a shower and was in bed by 8:30PM.
On Wednesday it’s to be cold and sunny, too cold for me. So I will continue with the bills/budget. It’s to start raining and rain until noon on Thursday. But it’s to be in the 50’s so my helper friend and I can do the plum pruning and get the covers on the cold frames on Thursday afternoon.
