Bathroom knickknacks done
On Friday morning I was up just after 6AM and got the fires going and the cat fed. I got my post up and then got the kitchen cleaned up. I sat down for a while then went out and washed up all the knickknacks from the bathroom cleaning the day before.
Once they were done, I made the list of what equipment we would need to set up the office for seedlings. Then I sat down to rest until she arrived at 12:30PM.
The first thing we did was check all the seedlings and thin the ones that needed it. All but columbine are up now. Then we set up a fan for the leeks and started watering the trays. I had to go sit down and she finished the watering.
We took the notes and the list to the cellar and attempted to find all the stuff. But my notes from last year were so bad; it made a lot of extra work trying to figure out what we needed.
We finally got most of the stuff upstairs and started setting up the first shelf, the hardest as we have to level it with shims. We finally succeeded and then got the next shelf up and the big lights hung. We even remembered to test the bulbs beforehand.
I made clear notes as we went and we managed to get the upper light hung before she had to go. The office was a disaster area.
About 20 or 30 years ago I bought a Christmas cactus at a tag sale in Turners Falls. The woman told me she had had it for 30 years. I have a photo of it in 2007 with a flower, but I don’t think it’s flowered since then.
Branches would get broken off and some of them were put into the large planter in the office. That plant has flowered a few times over the years. Others are in pots in the living room and they flower more frequently.
But the odd thing is, of the many that have been stuck in water, sometimes for many years, 2 have flowered so far this month.
The mother plant is much smaller these days but keeps on going in its hanging pot in the north window.
I was so wiped out when she left I just sat in my chair until supper, then after supper until 7:30PM when I had to get shades pulled and fires started. I was in bed at 8:30PM.
On Saturday I have to finish setting up the office, make the rest of the notes, then move into the living room and get the 2 windows set up and make their notes.
My #1 intern has 14 trays still to wash and 16 domes. She may help with set up if she finishes in time. That ought to finish me off for the day. If I can stay awake, we might watch ‘Sense and Sensibility’ in the evening.
