Purple finch and goldfinch
Saturday I woke at 5AM but didn’t get up until 5:30AM. I check the e-mail then went out and got the kitchen cleaned up and started setting up for the seed starting.
I sat down to do the seeds, markers, and notes and discovered because I’d taken so many trays to the cold frame, the plan for this starting’s trays was no good. So I had to re-do that. Next I got out the notes sheets and put away the previous startings’ notes as I went.
Then I got out the seeds I’d need and couldn’t find the Kapija pepper seeds. Inventory showed I had some. So I checked to see if I had ordered any, but no. I had some, apparently. So I sat down and started going through each bag in case they had gotten stuck to another packet. Turns out they were a tiny ziplock bag and blended in with the bottom of the bag they belonged in.
My #2 intern arrived around 9AM and set to work counting out pots and then filling trays and pots. I worked up a different system because there were so many different plants, 29 to be exact.
I’d group seeds and notes together for each tray and then group all the notes and seeds together for an area, like that Back Porch. The interns said it made the job so much easier!
So mostly I was writing notes and markers or looking for missing seeds. My #2 intern worked until 1PM and her sister, #1 intern, arrived about noon and took over. Shortly after that, I finished the notes, and started filling pots and soaking them.
My #1 intern did the seeds. Once all the pots were ready, I started doing seeds and washing covers for the trays. We finished about 2PM and then had to clean up the mess.
All the cabinets, the stool, the chair, the counters, and the floor had to be wiped down. That soil has dried out so much it makes a ton of dust. I finished about 4 PM and went to lie down to watch ‘Leave It to Beaver’ until supper time.
I pulled the shades around 8PM but didn’t light a fire as it was to be 50F and no one had brought in wood. I was in bed by 8:30PM.
On Sunday I have 3 posts to write to catch up and I must find my big piece of plastic to put on the cold frame as the temps are to fall through the day, with the rain, into the low 30’s during the night. I’ll have to keep fires going all day and for the night. Nothing else planned.
