Tuesday, after another crappy night, I was up before 6AM, got the cat fed and my post up. I got the laundry folded and was ready when my general helper arrived at 8AM.
The first job was cleaning up the cold frames. There were some dead plants and the various surviving trays had mixed plants. In the end, the plants at the top of the photo are herbs, and the bottom, flowers. The tray has ones I hadn’t expected to find and would plant right away.
My youngest brother had come home the day before with the tickets to the Fair and a brochure. I had selected 2 events I wanted to see and sent a copy of the brochure to my oldest brother who is taking me. He checked it out, and decided we’d go on Saturday. He wanted to see Axe Women Loggers of Maine, one of the ones I had picked. So we are set to go on Saturday!
My general helper and I then moved over to the New Herb garden and got back to work on Row 5. We had to finish weeding the north side of Row 5 and the south side of Row 6 before we could plant. We prepped the beds to be planted and got the plants in and mulched. We didn’t get the whole row finished, the existing plants need amendment and mulched still. And there are several walkways that now need raked.
There were a LOT of volunteers of all kinds and I left what I could. We had to transplant some Tulsi basil into Row 6. Once we’d cleaned up, I set up the sprinkler as I’d need to run it in the evening.
As I’ve mentioned, the smoke detectors keep going off. So the last job I asked her to do was vacuum out the smoke detectors. There were 9 of them. So we dragged the ladder and vacuum from the cellar to the attic and she got them all done. We’d just put everything away, when they went off again. Sigh…
So I called the electrician. He called back and even though these are all wired together, they still have batteries. And after nearly 5 years, they need replaced. I wish I’d known that when my general helper was up on the ladder.
It’s not a job I can do, due to motion sickness from Lyme disease. My youngest brother hurt his hip on Monday so he can’t do it. So I guess I’ll have to ask Tom or intern #3 to do it. I’m not sure I have enough batteries, as the electrician couldn’t say if they were AA or 9V. So I have to get batteries too.
In the process of cleaning out rows, there were a lot of good looking black-eyed Susans, so I put them in a vase. They are one of my favorite flowers.
By the time we finished at noon, I was exhausted. I got a shower and was in bed at 1PM. I slept until 4PM when the smoke detectors went off again. I made some supper and watched Big Bang Theory until 8PM. I’d started the sprinkler in the New Herb garden at 6PM. I’d had to close the house up at 7PM as it’s to be barely 50F during the night.
On Wednesday I hope to get out to the New Herb garden and get everything done through Row 5. But a lot will depend on how I sleep. I might just finish the bills/budget for July/August so I can pay September. Sigh…. And I have to do something about the smoke detectors.
