I started my spring garden today. I am very excited. My commitment this year is to grow as much of my own food as possible in an organic way.
The weather is still cold, but I think the seeds will come along nicely for early spring. I am planting collards which is a favorite in the southern United States and two types of heritage lettuce. I will update with the harvest amount of each crop as the season progresses. All photos are by
First photo is my horseradish plants. These winter well and will spring up soon. There are two in the raised bed and I will harvest some of the roots soon.
These next two photos are the lettuce seeds. The seeds are very light and I plant them about 4 cm deep.
This is the bed after planting. There's not much to see!
Hopefully that will change in the next 45 days.
I planted two types of lettuce
The two types of lettuce I planted are heirloom varieties. The first is Black Seeded Simpson and the second is Parris Island, which is a Romaine type of lettuce.
I am excited to plant and I hope I am not too early into the season.
