Hello my dear Hivers of this wonderful community. How are you and your plants? I hope you're all doing good and great.
Having a variety of plants in a garden is an amazing view. Today I got to visit our garden and found a medicinal plant which I highly used after I gave birth.
The medicinal plant I am referring to is the Sambong or some calls it Gabon. At first back when I was still young I don't appreciate it that much. It's really mostly well-knowned to the elders.
I only get to appreciate it's value after I got pregnant. Sambong as we call it is used to ease beriberi. It's one of the oldest home remedies I have known from my parents. I boil a water and put the Sambong in it. Then I soak my feet to the warm water with sambong. The elders said it has a therapeutic effect to women having beriberi and I can say it's effective.
This plant is one of the least attended plants I have known. We didn't really plant it in our garden. Originally it's our neighbor who have it. But since this plant grows from seed dispersal it reached our house.
When the ripe fruit of the Sambong is flewn by the wind it grows where it's dropped. Initially we just have one tree of this plant. When it grew and had flowers and we're flewn by the wind it sprout as many as I can no longer remember.
It has a beautiful flower too. It grows up to more than 6 ft. tall. I specially like it's smell. It's like a menthol and when it's boiled it really feels good in the skin.
But it's also important to be cautious when using it. Back to the first time I gave my son a bath, i used this Sambong mixed to the boiling water which I used to bath my son. I thought it's fine because I used it to my eldest child, Yashfeen.
To my dismay which actually is my fault. I had not considered that a child's delicate skin can be irritated by it. My baby got rashes from it. Not knowing it's the cause I continued using it. But my husband later found it might be because of the use of Sambong. It's leaves have a tiny hair that causes skin irritation. It's actually bearable for adults but to infants it's not.
Other than that, Sambong has many uses. It can be a good home remedy for cough. It's even used as one of the ingredients in some medicines. It's amazing how this simple looking plant to have many uses and therapeutic effects.
To this day, basically Sambong is everywhere in our yard.
Do you have this kind of plant, too in your garden? I will be glad to know. That's all for today about Sambong. Thanks for reading this far. Til my next post!
