Hello, wonderful gardeners of Hive. This would be my first time posting in the Hive Garden community and I’m super thrilled to be here. I hope you all are doing well.
So, my mum informed my sisters and I out of the blue that she had gotten some plots of land and she intended to add it to our additional farmland that was in the backyard. This wasn’t a welcomed surprise because our farm at the back was tasking at best, so the prospect of having more wasn’t so thrilling.
Nevertheless, we all yelled ‘Yayyy!’ because there was nothing like several hours in the scorching sun and a week-long body ache to make a girl feel alright.
So, around midday this morning, we started the hike to the plots that were situated on the premises of a community secondary school not so far from our house. We had been informed by the principal of the school before this time that a man had been hired to use a tractor to take out the weeds that had gathered since the last planting season, so our work was cut out for us.
However, much to our horror, as we got to the farm, we discovered the tractor guy had barely done the job. In fact, he had dug the weeds inside out, burying them back into the soil. My mum, who had initially planned to have us plant on the two plots had no choice but to cancel out one and have us plant on the other, seeing the incredible amount of work waiting for us.
We positioned our tools and set out to work, surrounded by other people who had their plots of land to till. The bad thing was that farming was mostly done in the mornings before the sun comes out and so seeing that it was already midday, we weren’t prepared for how scorching the sun was.
Mum divided us into groups. Some to weed and some to start tilling and planting. I was in the latter section. Our job for the day was to plant corn seeds and cassava stems. Mum glared at me when I tried to pick up my phone to take pictures so I promptly dropped it and continued my work. Anyways, the sun wouldn't even have allowed me to take a decent picture even if I was so inclined.
The sun soon became unbearable and we went to one of the classrooms to rest. (excluding Mum though) Soon enough, we noticed incredibly dark clouds approaching. We rushed back to the farm to complete our work. It became so windy and we feared that the rain would meet us before we could finish. The dark clouds looked ethreal by the way, and as the biggest fan of clouds like this, I couldn’t resist taking a picture.
Five hours after we arrived and we were finally done. We had planted the corn seeds and most of thr cassava stems and everything was set for our next arrival where we would plant melon seeds. What we thought would be a gruesome experience turned out to be incredibly fun. We joked around while working and laughed and sang and danced. Took plenty of pictures to show our friends who thought we were ‘bougie' that we could work and weren’t afraid to get our hands dirty. Even Mum was in such a happy mood in the end. We attributed it to the breezy weather that was preceding the storm.
We managed to make it back home before the heavy rains started and minus the cut mum had at some point, it was generally a wonderful experience. I concluded that if all farm days were like this, I wouldn't mind coming again.
Thanks for visiting my blog and have a pleasant weekend.❤️
