Lately I've been more serious in my garden, not just backyard garden per say, but serious farming business. I hear some neighborhood friend say "I've been working extra mild." Yes, and why not? "If the person chasing you to harm hasn't stop, why do you stop?? 🤣. That's little buh to amuse you! No one should advise you to work hard before you start working hard, that's my philosophy! When you sit and analysis things not turning in its right direction, you've to change your ways.
My story....
I used to farm sometime ago in addition to my teaching profession, things was working right and i thought that's Ok for mean. I lived normal, eat rich, pay my bills alright and other miscellaneous spending which isn't budgeted for. As we used to say: "No condition has ever being permanent," things keep changing with time. In the early last year, hijack of fuel prices, hyperinflation and higher prices of commodities spoiled every thing; including the basic necessity which is food. Let's to talk about renting and other stuff! We talk things going to be in a jiffy, the Government make things turn in its right direction. But, this is the just the opposite of what I was thinking 🤔. So yeah!, when things change in opposite directions, we've to also change to balance the situation.
I thought is wise having other side job like garden or small farm in addition to the teaching job is "another form of saving." Even at all, if you don't get surplus to sell at the market level, you've little to supplement the cost of foodstuffs you buy. Last year as the year was closing, maize grains were purchasing at a price of Gh¢ 700.00 ( $60.09) per 60kg bag, something which was purchasing at Gh¢ 300.00($25.75). What is the prediction of the current price of maize as new maize grains haven't been produced? It's closely to Gh¢ 900.00($77.25) per 60kg bag. For all these while that the economy has been hard, things not clicking for us, our salaries and allowances couldn't matched with the hyperinflation and hardship economy; it stands still. That's the reason why I've determined to have this side farming.
sharpening my cutlass to begin work in the farm
Yes, Iron sharpen iron!, if the economy is becoming hard nut to break, it must be faced with hard and good strategic plan! So, in the morning, I took my cutlass, went straight to the farm as usual to begin the task avail for me. No time to be wasted; i then placed my "sharpened stone" and began sharpening till the level of sharpness that I felt it could weed. We have left with few cutting of stumps and gathering of weeds. But Asare was sick with malaria for some days now. I should be kind for him by sacrificing to come and work alone; that sound good friendship, when one isn't well, another is there to fill his gap. When i finished sharpening, I began the day working by cutting the stumps and gathering of the debris from the surface of the soil. One could this is insane! As an Agriculturalist why should you gather the material which could serve as mulch and burn? Yeah, it sounds crazy though): but this is to let the land devoid of plenty materials which could interrupt sowing of different crops. We are coming to sow maize and cassava sticks which could be very difficult for the labourers who will sow.
