Hello to all the Hivers who love agriculture and plants in general in this community. In addition to being a photographer and collector of ornamental plants, one of my current jobs consists of the biological inspection and sustenance of a family garden. Said garden was previously built with the objective of planting vegetables for future sales to private businesses or for the local population. Over time we have modified the objective of this business since the vegetable offers in the agricultural markets are too high and, therefore, the garden now functions to be self-sustaining with fresh vegetables at home. Plantings are scheduled and carried out by me with the help of another subordinate worker who is in charge of irrigation, harvesting, weed removal, cleaning and preparing the substrate. Phytosanitary surveillance is strictly carried out by me, as is any application of organic or chemical products if necessary.
The objective of cultivation has always been to be totally organic, although the low availability of products of this nature has sometimes caused the application of non-aggressive chemical products to control pests. We must remember that any application of chemicals must be carried out by a professional since non-recommended doses will affect both the harvest and potential consumers. Organic products are highly recommended but experience over these years has shown that they are very useful for small crops. Larger crops are almost impossible to treat with organic pesticides since the spread of pests is usually greater than organic control. Even so, I recommend always using insect traps, aromatic repellent plants, among many other simple techniques to keep pest populations at non-worrying levels.
The main vegetables that we grow in the garden are different varieties of arugula or arugula, large peppers, small chili peppers, cilantro, lettuce, mint, different varieties of basil, chives, black and common cabbage, onions of various types, papaya, varieties of bananas, varieties of avocado or avocado, plums, figs, cherimoya, soursop, coffee, passion fruit, different varieties of lemons and other citrus fruits, chard, tomatoes and rosemary. Over time, crops are rotated depending on the seasons and prevailing climatic conditions. In recent years, heat has been a determining factor in the vegetables to be planted since not all plants tolerate high temperatures or intense sunlight.
Some vegetables and fruits that we currently have in the garden:
Later we plan to incorporate other plants such as radish, beet, colorful chard, parsley, dill, spinach and incorporate new varieties of bananas. The garden is not a simple task and you must have constant control to achieve optimal results. You can ask me any questions about cultivation in the comments so I can try to help you as much as I can. I hope to publish later the results of other plantings that I want to incorporate into the garden and show the quality of the harvest obtained. Have a nice day and a very productive harvest. See you soon.
