January was quite cold and snowy this year. February was a real roller coaster when it comes to weather with a lot of changes, a lot of headaches and a lot of flu everywhere. I honestly could not wait for the shortest month of the year to be over. With March came a lot of nice, sunny days which also means that garden work is slowly picking up.
A lot of times we get fooled by the March weather as it can still get cold in the late nights and early mornings. So far the night temperatures have been above 0 degrees Celsius but we are still not safe from the frost and temperature drops. Fruit trees are slowly starting to bloom and those are the most sensitive at this time of the year. We have our fingers crossed that the weather will be gentle to them and it won't cause a lot of damage.
Other than some salad, spinach, a little bit of spring onions and a rosemary bush that's getting bigger each year and seems like it's resistant to any type of weather, there's not much going on in the garden at the moment. Raspberries and blackberries have been trimmed and they are patiently waiting for their time as well as strawberries. Now it's more about preparing the soil, collecting the seeds and making plans on where to plant everything.
This week potatoes and onions will be planted and maybe some sweet peas. I hope I'll get some interesting photos of this process to share with you guys. Other than tomatoes, I feel like potatoes and onions take the most time and effort to be planted. Potatoes also take up a big portion of the space, that's another reason why it's more work that some other veggies that take up small chunk of space. My parents are at that age where each year it's getting harder for them to keep up with the garden and all the other work that comes with having a house, yard, garden and a little bit of animals.
Even though I don't live at my family house anymore, I was lucky enough to marry someone who lives 5 minutes away, lol. So I am planning to help my parents with the garden as much as I can. Gardening can be hard but it's also very enjoyable and rewarding which is another reason I am grateful I'll be able to still be around, help and learn. Yes, after all these years I still have a lot to learn when it comes to growing fruits and veggies.
