Good evening dear community !
As I have already mentioned in previous publications, although the maintenance of our garden is an activity that gives us many satisfactions on a personal level and allows a special connection with the plants, working in it during the winter months can become quite hard.
In these latitudes, from the month of May until almost the end of August, it is characterized as a time of very low temperatures, so plants require special care so they can survive.
During the cold season we have reached temperatures of -15° C, with which most of the plants are burned by the frost.
The characteristics of the climate mean that in order to get through these months of low temperatures we have to take certain precautions such as irrigation, the placement of anti-freeze blankets and even the creation of small greenhouses.
Regarding irrigation, we must take into account that it is not necessary to do it every day, watering once a week is more than enough. We must make sure that the water goes directly to the soil and not run the risk of wetting the leaves to prevent them from freezing.
We must also take special care with those plants that are more delicate and require more care for which we place a transparent nylon to generate a kind of microclimate that allows the development of the plants in a safe way. Many of them even come to bloom as a result of this microclimate.
I remember that I have sometimes forgotten to cover a plant and it took several months for it to recover from the damage caused by the frost. This work is hard because sometimes you have to work with very low temperatures.
Undoubtedly, keeping our plants healthy in the cold season requires extra work, which we must supervise periodically to ensure that we can get to spring with our plants in all their splendor.
With the arrival of warm weather, all that effort made, nature ends up rewarding us with the most beautiful gift it can give us, its flowers.
In September we can leave the plants outdoors and they will soon become vigorous and begin to reward all the effort made during the winter. The increase in temperature and the number of hours of sunlight play a very important role.
During the change of season we put compost and black soil that we produce with the Californian earthworms, which makes the plants lush very quickly.
Of all the plants we have, there are some that we take extra care of because they are plants that grow in the warm regions of the country where temperatures are high all year round.
They are the missionary lily and the walking lily that have flowers very similar to orchids. Their beauty is unique and for them to bloom they need extreme care, since they are not in their natural habitat.
Their flowers last only a short time, two or three weeks, but they are still worth the effort.
For anyone who needs to find an activity that disconnects them from the worries and stress of everyday life, I recommend that you work in your garden and you will see how nice it feels when the care of the plants translates into a beautiful flowering yard.
I leave you a big hug.
