Hello, friends of Hive and Hive Garden. I hope you’re all well and that you enjoyed the Easter holidays. Today I’d like to take this opportunity to give you an update on how the seedlings of Margariteño tomatoes and peppers I’m growing at home are getting on. It’s not a large crop, as it’s just for our own consumption if the plants continue to thrive – which I hope they will.
It’s been two weeks since I told you about the seedbed, and by then I’d already transplanted the Margariteño tomato plants into individual pots, but the paprika plants were still together because they weren’t big enough to move yet, but I did that a few days ago now, and I’m surprised at how quickly the pepper plants have grown – and the tomato plants too – so much so that this week I’ll have to start moving them again to their permanent spot.
I’ve already told you that the soil here at home isn’t the best, plus there are loads of ants, and they’re a real nuisance for the tomato and pepper plants because they’ve already destroyed them right down to the roots, so we’re going to try planting them in gardening bags and filling them with the soil I’ve prepared with compost; hopefully, in bags we’ll be able to keep the ants under better control and the fertilised soil will yield good results.
Right now they’re all on the barbecue table, where the ants can’t get to them, so everything’s fine. They’re also planted in good soil, and look how healthy they are – they’ve grown quickly and are really strong.
I’ve got 15 tomato plants at the moment and I gave a few to my wife’s aunt because I’m going to swap them for some chilli plants she’s got, but they’re still small and she hasn’t brought them over yet; I also want to give some to my mum so I don’t end up with so many at home. There aren’t many paprika plants, but I might give some to my mum too – everything grows well there because the soil is good.
As for the pumpkin and watermelon plants, all the watermelon ones have dried out and the pumpkins don’t look too good either. The thing is, the sun is really strong here on the island, plus it hardly ever rains and there’s no shade in the garden, so even though I water them every day, they turn yellow and start to wither. If anyone has any ideas to help me with this, I’d be very grateful.

Hola amigos de Hive y de Hive Garden, espero que todos estén bien y que hayan disfrutado de la Semana Santa, hoy quiero aprovechar para darles un reporte de cómo va el semillero de tomate margariteño y pimentón que tengo en la casa, que no es grande porque es para consumo de nosotros en la casa si las matas siguen por buen camino, que espero que sea así.
Ya pasaron dos semanas desde que les conté del semillero y en ese momento ya había trasplantado a envases individuales las matas de tomate margariteño, pero las de pimentón todavía estaban juntas porque no tenían el tamaño para cambiarlas, pero eso lo hice hace unos días ya y me sorprende lo rápido que han crecido esas de pimentón y las de tomate también que ya esta semana tengo que comenzar a cambiarlas otra vez para un lugar definitivo.
Yo ya les dije que aquí en la casa la tierra no es la mejor, además hay muchas hormigas y esas son una peste para las matas de tomate y pimentón porque ya nos ha pasado que las acaban desde la raíz, así que vamos a probar sembrando en las bolsas de jardinería para ponerle de la tierra que tengo preparada con el compost y de repente así en bolsas se puede controlar mejor lo de las hormigas y con la tierra abonada haya buenos resultados.
Ahorita todas están en el mesón de la parrillera y ahí no le llegan las hormigas así que todo va bien y están también sembradas en tierra buena y vean que están sanitas y han crecido rápido y están fuertes.
De las de tomate tengo ahorita 15 y regale varias a una tía de mi esposa porque las voy a cambiar por unas de ají que ella tiene, pero todavía están pequeñas y no las ha traído, también quiero regalarle unas a mi mamá para no quedar con tantas en la casa, las de pimentón no son muchas pero de repente le doy unas también a mi mamá que allá se le da de todo porque la tierra es buena.
Sobre las matas de auyama y patilla, todas las de patilla se secaron y las de auyama no se ven muy bien, lo que pasa es que el sol es muy fuerte aqui en la isla, además casi no llueve y no hay sombra en el patio y por más que las riego todo los días se ponen amarillas y se comienzan a secar. Si alguien tiene una idea que me ayude con eso será bien recibida.
Bueno mis amigos eso es todo por hoy. Si cambio las matas de tomate esta semana y tengo tiempo les paso contando porque ya mañana comienza el trabajo otra vez. Que estén muy bien.
