Have you ever heard or read the tagline/slogan - "FOOD SECURITY START AT HOME"?
Greetings to all farmers and gardeners here on hive, most especially here .
I’m here again to share with you a little about our strawberry plants that we grow for our own consumption. We have some strawberries planted in pots in our backyard, covered with used nets. And we also have some growing on our farm beside our cabbage plants, right at the edge of the terrace.
At first, the strawberries on our farm grew really well, they produced lots of big fruits just like the one that we buy on the market. My husband can harvest everyday but after a few years, although the strawberries are still alive, they don’t bear as much fruit anymore, and the berries have become smaller. Maybe because it was already 2 years producing good fruits that's why it can only produce smaller fruits today. Also, some of the fruit were eaten by the insects before we gather it.
Meanwhile, the strawberries I planted in pots at home are doing great and producing beautiful fruits. The only challenge is that my child keeps picking them whenever he sees one starting to ripen, haha he checks on them every morning and afternoon! If he just can’t wait for them to be ripen, He always asks me when the strawberries will ripen. 😂 There are times that even if it is not yet ripe he just pick it or if not he will asked his younger sister and picked the green one. 😂
Having our own plants, especially strawberries, is a great blessing to us because buying them in the market is quite expensive. Plus, we don’t always know what chemicals or sprays were used on store bought fruits. When you grow your own, you’re sure they’re safe and healthy for your family specially our kids.
My kids really love strawberry, so I decided to grow some at home so that whenever it bear fruits I can just pick it and give it to them. Also it is convenient for me because I have a baby to take care, so with this set up I can easily work or take care of them while the kids are sleeping. I covered my strawberry plants with used nets because of the chicken, I'm afraid they will eat and destroy my strawberries like what they did on my taro plants. 😂
As a mother and also a farmer truly believe that Food security really starts at home. How about you my fellow farmers, do you agree with this slogan too? Let me know you're answer in the comments section. ☺️
That’s all for today about our little strawberry garden. Thank you so much for reading my blog. Always remember to keep smiling. Mabuhay!
