With spring upon us, I see the garlic bulbs we planted last autumn are waking up and forming new growth. They made it through the winter and are now going to grow into some large bulbs hopefully. Right now all we can really see is what is above ground. But as the summer progresses we should see a lot of development into the bulbs before its time to harvest them. Glad they made it through the winter, with the amount of snow and ice we had.. those are some tough garlic bulbs.. quite impressed.
They will stay in the ground until around July, and then it will be time to pull them up.
Until then we have a few things to do, add nitrogen as needed. Pending a soil test I should know if much of the ammonia in the soil turned into nitrogen since last testing. If so we will not need to add much, but if it did not I will need to buy many bags of nitrogen to get them where they need to be.
So far the weeds have not been bad, but we have lots of wood chips to go to battle against them. We are still getting freezing weather, so once that is all over in a month or so they should growing a lot more.
While I was riding my electric dirt bike around I spotted a little turtle. I commonly come across wild life while riding around. I love it.
Not sure what kind it is, but it was keeping its head mostly in its shell so I just left it alone. Probably did not want to be bothered anyways.
Best of luck little garlic.
It is cool seeing the lines of garlic growing, not our most straight lines but should be fine for this year. We can always improve the following grow season, if all goes well we will be doing this over and over again.
Glad we have that well drilled, and the pump house is working. We can water them whenever the skies do not give us enough.
Even in the spots with lots of wood chips the garlic is growing. I will till those areas again after we get them out of the ground. Should mix the soil up some more.
Everything is so small right now, it was cool seeing them grow a little bit last year before the frosts came around and they paused. But now they are back to work growing again.
Lots of work ahead, its just starting for this year. But we have everything we need I think.
Seems like I am not the only one out here, deer frequently run around the fields. They not seem to eat the garlic but they can damage it running through where it grows so I will need to keep an eye on them.
So what is next? I am waiting my soil health test and total nutrient digestion results for my fields. I submitted the samples last week so they should have them by now. Any time I should get an email with the results. Then I can figure out if I am lacking any nutrients and add them as needed for the crops.
