The Brugmansia is in full bloom right now and the crisp nights of the fall season are beginning to take their toll on the vitality of the plant. Even so, the fragrance is still outstanding and one can not help but enjoy not only the beauty of the flowers but the majestic scent they offer each evening.
As you can see the plant has grown to quite a large size and the blossoms are really putting on a show. I would estimate that it reached about 8' this season. Soon it will be time to cut back the branches to about 3' and dig the plant back out of the ground. The Brugmansia has to be overwintered in the garage for the winter and not allowed to freeze. I can't remember how many years old it is now, but, I know it has been around for a long time.
Honeybees
Here are a few photos of the honeybees gathering as much nectar as they can before the frost hits. It was a warm, sunny day when I took these photos and the blossoms were loaded with bees.
As you can see the bees are really competing for all that pollen. They really seemed especially interested in the blossoms that were just getting ready to open.
Monarch Butterfly
One of the Monarchs that I released earlier in September landed on a blossom and I caught a picture just before it flew off. I think that was the first time that I remember one of them visiting the Brugmansia flowers. Usually, they focus on the Zinnia garden or one of my Butterfly bushes.
The lower leaves are beginning to yellow and fall off so it won't be long now before it has to come inside for the winter. I hope you enjoyed seeing the lovely flowers and of course all the little honeybees. Happy gardening my friends.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
