I'm not getting any younger and bending down to plant isn't as fun as it once was. I'm sure there are many of you that feel the same way. This past week, I decided to purchase this " #gro-rite raised garden bed ". It literally took less than 10 minutes to unpack it and assemble.
I happened to see a few videos on You Tube from S&K Greenhouse and decided to treat myself, plus it will help save my lower back.
I knew from previous posts about raised beds, that putting down a metal screen will keep the Voles and Mice from eating the root crops. I sent my husband to Lowes to purchase this one. We put it down and assembled the bed on top. We even had a few inches on either end left, so that worked out perfectly.
Of course, we were supervised and inspected by Miss Mika throughout the entire process.
We put all the cardboard into the bottom of the bed on top of the aluminum screen.
To save some space, we took some old firepit wood and layered it in the bottom.
Meanwhile, I had my husband gathering up leaves from along the fencing to put on top of the wood. It didn't take too long to fill it halfway with leaves. I did my best to squish them in between the logs.
After that, I put a large bag full of torn up egg cartons on top and now we are waiting for the heavy rain to compress it all.
Once it settles a bit, I will make a soil mix to fill the rest of the bed. I have everything I need, sand, peat moss, coco coir, perlite, and composted leaves. That should make a nice mix for the soil layer.
Then I will add in organic amendments like, bone meal, blood meal, worm castings, manure, and potash too. That will get done later in the week after the leaves settle. As I may have to add in some more before the soil mix goes in.
I plan on using this bed for the onion seedlings that I started in January. I'm so excited to have this very sturdy raised garden that will last for many years to come.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
