With a break in the cold spell we have had, I took advantage of the nice weather. I got the water set up to start the lettuce in the #hydroponics and brought out all the cold-hardy vegetables I had started in February.
The plants that I brought out included the onions, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, parsley, cilantro, and cabbages.
Each of these can handle a cool greenhouse even if the temps drop in to the 30's. I have a heater that will automatically turn on if it drops below 45 degrees F.
I had put this tray of perennial seeds out into the snow at the end of February to stratify. Now, that all the snow has melted I put it into the greenhouse; here's hoping that the seeds will germinate.
I had a few yellow potatoes starting to sprout so I halved them and let them sit on the counter to scab over. I pulled out one of the grow bags from the shed and planted them on the patio.
Throughout the fall and early winter, I throw torn up egg cartons, eggshells, kitchen scraps and coffee grounds into the raised beds. This is what it looked like after the snow melted. I turned it over mixing it well along with the other two frames.
It only took a few minutes to get them turned over enough to cover all the pieces.
All the sections in the vegetable garden got a light raking over and any leaves removed.
It felt so good to be out in the sunshine and getting the vegetable gardens ready for planting next month.
This garden area is mostly shade due to the Kouza Dogwood that shades it during the summer months. I got this all cleaned out and the Iris and Peonies are already popping up. The Foxglove plants look pretty good, but I may move them to sunnier spots, perhaps I can find room in one of the butterfly gardens.
I had to laugh once I was done with these two areas at how much my upper back had tightened up. I guess I should find some upper-body workouts to get into better gardening shape, lol.
Until next time, this is Sunscape
