One type of disease that often attacks mango trees is stem rot disease caused by a type of fungus Diplodia recifensis. This fungus lives inside the tree trunk and causes the stem to secrete a brown/black sap. This brown/black sap damages the mango tree trunk and causes the mango tree trunk to become porous. I have a mango tree in my front yard. At first this mango tree bears heavy fruit every mango fruit season, but in mid-2021, many of the mango tree trunks began to corrode and eventually many of the stems fell due to the rot. With a heavy heart I cut off most of the mango tree.
These few days, I saw the mango tree trunk that I had cut started to grow again, the leaves grew very thick, covering the entire surface of the trunk. If these leaves are allowed to continue to grow, my mango tree will not bear as much fruit as before. Because of that, today I am doing maintenance on the mango tree, so that the fungus and porous disease on the mango tree trunk can be overcome. I only use traditional methods to deal with pests and diseases that attack my mango trees.
Treatment of Mango Trees
Some of the maintenance that I did to the mango tree, so that the mango tree bears fruit again, namely :
1.Prune the leaves.
The leaves that I cut are the leaves that grow thickly on one stem, I only leave 1-2 twigs on the stem. By pruning some of the leaves, I hope this mango tree will bear fruit again.
2.Skin peeling / Cut down the stems affected by the fungus.
On some of the stems you can see white spots, usually these white spots will start to spread and attack healthy mango tree trunks, so I immediately peeled off the dermal layer/bark. But if these white spots have attacked most of the tree trunk, then I make cuts on the trunk.
3.Porous cutting of stems.
The main cause of my mango tree almost dying is because the stem is porous, so I cut down all the stems that are starting to look porous and emit brown/black mucus.
It turned out that the main stem had also started to be attacked by this porous disease. I scraped off the thick layer on the main stem to reduce the spread of the disease.
After pruning, my mango tree looks tidier.
4.Tree trunk circumcision.
The main purpose of circumcision is to speed up the fertilization process in mango trees, this is a traditional method that is not known by many people. Circumcision is done at the base of the tree, about one inch from the ground. Circumcision is done by peeling off the skin so that the cambium is visible. Circumcision is done around the tree.
5.Fumigation.
Fumigation is done by burning at the bottom of the mango tree. The ingredients for smoking are coconut fiber or dried banana leaves, because I don't have coconut fiber, I use dried banana leaves. Place dry banana leaves around the mango tree.
After the dry banana leaves are placed around the mango tree, then burn the banana leaves. The smoke that comes from burning banana leaves will kill fungus and cavities on the stems of mango plants.
By doing some of these treatments, I hope that the mango tree that starts to flower will bear fruit and grow into big, sweet mangoes.
