Hey amigos jardineros como están?, en mi anterior post en esta comunidad les mencione que tenia un mini cultivo de melón y sandia, pero no había visto hasta ahora un fruto de sandia, ni sabia como diferenciarlos. Ahora encontré las diferencias mas notables de las plantas, además es la primera vez que puedo ver en si como es el proceso de crecimiento de una sandia, es realmente increíble y me sorprendió el tamaño tan diminuto que tienen, y como pueden llegar a pesar hasta 15kg.
Literalmente es del tamaño de mi dedo, y no solo eso, si no que también es muy delicada, se que el sol en exceso puede quemar estos frutos y hay que voltearlos cada semana para que no se dañen por el envés.
Hey fellow gardeners how are you, in my previous post in this community I mentioned that I had a mini crop of melon and watermelon, but I had not seen until now a watermelon fruit, nor did I know how to differentiate them. Now I found the most notable differences of the plants, and it is also the first time I can see how is the process of growing a watermelon, it is really amazing and I was surprised by the tiny size they have, and how they can weigh up to 15kg.
It is literally the size of my finger, and not only that, but it is also very delicate, I know that too much sun can burn these fruits and you have to turn them every week so they are not damaged on the underside.
La diferencia mas notable entre las plantas, es que las hojas del melón son un poco mas redondas, mientas que las de la sandia son un poco mas finas. La flor a simple vista es del mismo color y tamaño, sin embargo el fruto de la sandia desde muy pequeño viene con el color característico y el rayado que tiene una sandia, lo contrario del melón, que pasa de ser verde a tornarse un poco amarillo y además las grietas del melón salen con el tiempo.
Hasta los momentos he visto 3 etapas de crecimiento de las sandias, flor, fruto y fruto con 2 semanas, es realmente increíble, nunca en la vida me imagine que fuese así, y lo estoy presenciando ahora. Tengo amigos a los cuales les enseñe las fotos y quedaron igual de asombrados que yo, como algo tan pequeño puede crecer tanto en tan poco tiempo.

Además de esto, encontré una manera de mantener alejada a la plaga de las plantas, con algo que no afecta el crecimiento ni desarrollo de ellas, sin embargo muchos agricultores de la zona le temen. Y es aplicar azufre micronizado en pequeñas cantidades sobre las plantas en su primera etapa, antes de la floración, ya que el caliente del azufre puede hacer que se caigan.
El azufre tiene propiedades que trabajan como fungicidas, el sulfito que genera puede servir como repelente y los insectos no se posan sobre las hojas, así que también es bueno para esto, al igual le da verdor a la hoja y aporta algunos nutrientes.
In addition to this, I found a way to keep the pest away from the plants, with something that does not affect their growth or development, although many farmers in the area are afraid of it. And that is to apply micronized sulfur in small quantities on the plants in their first stage, before flowering, since the hot sulfur can cause them to fall over.
Sulfur has properties that work as fungicides, the sulfite it generates can serve as a repellent and insects do not land on the leaves, so it is also good for this, as well as giving greenness to the leaf and providing some nutrients.
Comprobé con mis ojos que realmente funciona, eso si el olor es realmente horrible, pero creo que es por ello que funciona como repelente. Es ideal contra las moscas blancas y algunos ácaros.
I checked with my eyes that it really works, although the smell is really horrible, but I think that is why it works as a repellent. It is ideal against whiteflies and some mites.
Incluso aplicar azufre por el riego es igual de bueno, ya que los gusanos cortadores u otros insectos que se encuentren en el tallo y raíces de la planta pueden verse afectados por esto. Así es mi caso, tengo una especie de nematodos o una plaga llamada fungus gnat, unos gusanos miniaturas que se ven a nivel muy microscópico y se alimentan de las raíces nuevas de las plantas, de esta manera la planta no absorbe nutrientes y se marchita poco a poco.
Even applying sulfur by irrigation is just as good, as cutworms or other insects found in the stem and roots of the plant can be affected by this.
