Greetings!
It has been 35 days since my rice crops were planted last December 2022. In this blog, I am going to show a short walkthrough of how we farmers irrigate our rice crops from the water pump to the rice field. There are many ways farmers get water, from irrigation, deep-well water pumps, and open-water water pumps. And there are also two main ways how a water pump is operated. Here in our town farmers uses diesel engine and electric motor to spin the water pump. As of today, diesel is still pretty popular but the electric water pump is starting to get popular too. Multiple farmers say that an electric water pump is less expensive to operate than a diesel water pump. As for me, this is my first time using an electric water pump. At the end of this blog, I added a short video of the walkthrough in addition to the images.
At the end of this blog, I added a short video of the walkthrough in addition to the graphical walkthrough.
At the Electric Water Pump Hut
The first step is to get to the place where the water pump is located. We all knew that electricity is very very dangerous so I am also very very careful not to mess up whenever I am operating the electric water pump. Water and electricity are a perfect recipe for disaster so I am always very very careful with the electric water pump. Our electric water pump is installed near the river since it is an open-water electric water pump.
Source of Water to Fill the Water Pump
The first thing that we farmers do is to get some water to fill the water pump. Water is needed to be filled inside the water pump or else it will not suck water from the water source. In my case, since I am using an open-water electric water pump the river is my water source. It is also where I get water to fill the water pump.
Fetching Water to Fill the Water Pump
We, farmers, use any kind of container to fetch some water to be filled to the water pump. In my case, I am using a small pail. The water pump that I am using needs two pails of water to be full. The water pump needs to be full of water or else its suction will not work.
Using a Customized Funnel to Fill the Water Pump
Putting water into the water pump when using an electric water pump is a bit tricky and dangerous. The electric motor and the circuitry should not get wet or else something terrible is going to happen to the electric motor and to the electric circuit of the electric motor. So, every time I am filling the water pump with water I am making sure that the electric motor and its circuitry will not get wet.
Opening a Portion of the Bund or Irrigation Canal
After turning on the water pump we farmers need to open a portion of the bund or irrigation canal so that we can direct the water where it is supposed to go. Our job is to close or open parts of the bund or irrigation canal wherever it is necessary.
And let the water flow...
And then when we opened or closed portions of the bund or irrigation canal we just let the water flow until the water reached a depth of 1-2 inches.
Here is the short video of this short walkthrough...
And that's how we farmers manage the irrigation of our rice crops.
That is all for now guys, catch you up with the next one. Wishing you all safety, good health, and abundance.
