Greetings Rice Farmers!
Today, I am going to share with you guys another job that a farmer like me always does during the rice farming season - placing white flags all over the rice farm.
Traditionally, white flags are used by farmers to deter birds that will attempt to eat the rice grains of the rice crops. Farmers also believe that birds carry grass seeds with them, so, farmers would place flags on their rice farm to deter birds from landing or staying on the rice field.
The white flags that I am going to place on our rice farm
But today, there are two purposes why I am going to place white flags on our rice. The first one is to deter birds from landing, staying, or eating the rice grains of our crops. And the second is to be used as a marker. I am going to mark the locations of the grasses, broadleaves, and sedges that grew on our rice farm.
As can be seen in the photo below, I am holding a broadleaf commonly called Wedgewort.

I am putting markers on the locations because it will be easier for me to identify the locations when I am going to apply herbicides to eradicate the grasses, broadleaves, and sedges.
Below is another image of the grasses, sedges, and broadleaves.
A concentration of broadleaves, grasses, and sedges
When I found the first location of a wide concentration of grasses, broadleaves, and sedges I then insert a flag on the soil near them as can be seen in the gif image below.

And below is a photo of the first flag that I placed on our firm. It took me about a couple of hours before I finished placing the flags because the height of the rice crops is blocking the view of the soil below. I have to step on the field itself and take a closer look before I could confirm that there are indeed grasses in the area.
And here's the video that I recorded while I am doing the job.
