There is something about a bustling place like a coffee shop that I am drawn to. The background noise from people the chaos of moving in and out and curious faces that I just couldn't resist sketching out. I was trying to capture that specific energy the way groups gather around small, circular tables, seemingly miles apart in their own private conversations, yet all sharing the same space.
The process of drawing this one was a bit of a marathon but my subject today is quite easier to handle. No one seems to be making major movements the people are sitting still and quiet. I don't usually do this but their stillness made me pull out my penup and draw. I am still keeping those color blocks simple so the focus stays entirely on the people. I wanted to make sure those wobbly, hand drawn lines really popped against the warm background. You know, I kept redrawing the table settings because I wanted the coffee cups to look just right not perfect, not symmetrical. Each little wobbly line is just me trying to translate the feeling of a real place, real people, and real life. I really prefer these imperfect edges in this day and age. It was built by hand, stroke by stroke, in the middle of all that ambient noise and conversation.
I think that's the real joy of this process which is taking a scene that feels completely ordinary and deciding it's worth documenting.
Instead of taking a quick snap, a hurriedly sketched picture would be best option. It kept me busy for ten minutes or more enjoying myself creating.
