Hello friends and community members,
This is my interpretation of the character called the Orchardkin from the #charactober drawing challenge. I love the description I read for the character like it has antlers and fruits hanging from it, wow I think I can make a nice character just by focusing on that design hook alone but I also tried including some of the following:
Branch antlers with ripe fruit. ( that is done )
Fruit falling or carried in hands. ( not done)
Warm, autumnal palette. ( done )
Cluster Anchor:
Fruit as harvest—abundance as weight. ( abundance not done)
Let me talk about my thought process and How I came up with my design
I am making sure I got the antlers and fruits prioritized in the design before I get too excited and forget that important detail. The antlers spread out like that of a reindeer so it can carry a lot of fruits. I am thinking the character is a tree with exposed bark and branches and maybe some foliage sprouting randomly everywhere. It is a creature from the forest, so I am inclined to use natural elements if I will give it accessories but here I am envisioning the character wearing a cloak.
Let us jump to the finished line drawing. The shape of the antlers are less deer-like now but more of branches and are more upright than before to make it look like more of a tree than an animal. The eyes took a different shape because the initial draft is looking like scary it is still though but with a smile on its eyes now. For the mouth I kept those small slits on the neck so air can pass through if this character speaks this is like the voice box slash mouth. The foliage are now neatly arranged and placed above the shoulders looking like collars. The hands are positioned as if holding something but I decided not to add more details to avoid it looking cluttered. The idea of a cloak I dropped and replaced it with something that looks like leaves. I am still aiming for the feet to have toes that look like roots or bark. I think I still hit that.
I almost forgot to add the fruits hanging from the antlers. So here they are as my last touch to the design. Made them appear to be placed randomly rather than growing from the antlers because I want to use different shapes and colors and kinds of fruits.
One of the brief is use autumn colors. Here I show you the color choices I used for this drawing. I have brown, orange , golden and green and adjusted the value if needed.
This character could be a spirit inhabiting the tree that thought entered my mind while wrapping it all up and decided I give it a glowing small flame or glow on the eyes. I think that was a cool design choice. To avoid it from looking too green and forest like I changed the color of the feet into something gray and bluish. Another design choice I love.
This is the Orchardkin I am glad it already had a name because I am too bad with thinking of a better aname for character. Orchardkin is just right and fit for my new orginal character. Hope you like it.
