Hello friends and Draw a day community members,
I am joining the LET US DRAW BUGS drawing challenge of . I like this theme because I know I can do a lot with bugs say if I am feeling a little inspired I might turn it into something with super powers or something mythical and magical which I will then submit to another contest the Sketchquest Evolve A Bug Contest by
. It is a win for all who wish to join.
Kylin provided a pinterest board filled with a lot of unique bugs I must admit it took me a while deciding which bug to draw for my first try. One bug in particular caught my interest the stink bug I provided the bug reference photo here : Catacanthus Incarnatus, man faced stink bug https://ca.pinterest.com/pin/233905774391813486/
Here is the finished drawing I made
This is a really quick doodle of the man faced stink bug. I may have omitted some minor lines or details but you get the idea that this is supposed to look like a face.
Here is how I made my drawing:
I used symmetry to make the drawing process quick and easy for me since the bug itself has symmetrical features. At this stage I am more concerned with getting the face detail on the wings starting with what looks like a triangular nose in the middle. It was easy and did this rough sketch in one go.
Next I finalized the line drawing in black. I did some minor adjustments on the bug. First is the shape of the head. I zoomed in on the reference photo to make sure I get the shape right. I added the eyes on each side of the head they are protruding laterally giving the bug its unique look. I also defined the antenna with several segmentations. The upper pair of legs I made them look shorter. The part I am not confident to draw would be the nose like structure I fear I might make it too big or broad but I think I did just fine. The obvious hiccup for me would be that semi circular part on the sides of the wings that was the last part I did here I was trying to omit it at first but that will not do justice to this unique bug. You need to sweat the small stuff really.
Here is the most challenging part because the critical details are going to be added here. Let us start with the semi circular black and white bands. Without these the wings could look ordinary I did not really copied how many bands are there I just eyeballed how many I can fit in there. The shape of the nape if I can call it that is also challenging to make but I am glad it worked out well. They eyes are surprisingly easier than I had imagined. Now the last detail is the tip of the wings the one with curvy linear stripes. This is not symmetrical so I am literally drawing each line.
The image above is really looking like a mask or face at this point is it not?
Now let us talk about the color. This is the shade of yellow I used I think this is the closest to the reference image. Since I am making this a flat drawing I did not add shadows nor highlights just a flat yellow and black lines.
For the tip of the wings I used a brownish black color. I did not want to use black here or else I will be losing the stripe details. Looking at the reference image I noticed the head is a little bluish or greenish, it could be the effect of the light when it was photograph nevertheless I decided to give the head that bluish tone to it. Then I carried that over to the rest of is legs to give it some sheen. That is the what it took to arrive at this bug drawing hope you enjoyed reading and like my bug art.
