Today we start the CODEX NOCTURNA character design challenge. Your task remains the same: interpret the riddle, incorporate the design hooks, and create the character portrait that acts as the visual solution to the mystery.
Here is the first one. I already made my own interpretation of the character you may use this as your reference but I know that you can do better.
The Ancient Stone Gargoyle
Riddle:
I weep salty grief from a fixed, cold stare, Guarding the secrets that scandals bear. Set high in the cloister where shadows convene, My tears turn to moss, a persistent green.
Design Hooks (Must-Haves):
Verdant Tears: Include moss, ivy, or green-tinged stone as a prominent textural element flowing from its eyes or mouth.
Guarding a Threshold: The character must look rooted or fixed in position, perhaps holding a heavy key or staff.
Sculpted Features: Incorporate stylized, stone-like, or heavily weathered facial features and body language.
Hint of Motion: While stone, the character should convey a silent, watchful movement or tension.
Create Your Portrait:
Design a character that encapsulates your interpretation of the riddle and incorporates the given hooks. Your art is the answer
Share Your Creation: Post your daily character design within the Draw A Day community and utilize the hashtags: #codexnocturna #characterdesign #Drawaday.
It’s totally up to you whether you complete all 30 prompts—no pressure at all. Just enjoy the process, and by the end of the month, you’ll have built a beautiful little collection of dark academia–themed portraits.
