Today’s prompt is an old compass, I must admit that it is not an easy prompt for me. I decided to weave it into Nory Brincecap’s story which is a bear character from my series of Nubbles from the Threadkin collection I made. Noryth runs the Starwhistle Pier, always watching tides and fog, it made sense that she would carry a compass. I placed the compass right on her chest like a necklace, hanging from a brass chain. Noryth keeps this old compass as a tool and keepsake which is from her ancestors.
The compass is showing some patina, it has a brassy glow like something passed down from generations. I liked the idea that it doesn’t just guide Nory but steadies her in the chaos of storms and festivals alike.
When drawing it, I wanted it to feel more symbolic than technical because that is the challenge I was talking about earlier. It is not a perfectly rendered instrument, but just an object to tell a story and add character. I was inspired by vintage naval medals, and some old maritime relics. I especially love adding that greenish patina to make it look old and beaten.
