Hey community members and friends
Sharing you my drawing today of a gentleman bug, this is my entry to the DRESS UP A BUG CONTEST of . I am using the mantis bug drawing of
for my reference.
When I saw the brilliant Dress Up a Bug character design / drawing contest hosted by the amazing I simply had to dive right in with excitement. I am just glad this creative prompt appeared, as it is the perfect way to spend my otherwise slow day. For my entry, I was instantly captivated by
's delicate digital mantis among the purple flowers. Looking at that elegant base design and the beautiful original colors got me excited imagining what kind of dress this mantis should have.
I love seeing this character unfold right before my eyes I knew I wanted to push my creativity and have a transformation, as seen in the final piece where I brought the character to life with my beloved washable markers and colored markers.
A Mantis of Meticulous Refinement
Here is my character, Sir Reginald Petal, defined in a single story sentence as The Travelling Bloom Curator, ensuring every perfect blossom subtly enhances the mood of the world’s refined garden dwellers. He is the complete creative adaptation of the mantis from ’s original vision.
When developing his personality, I wanted Sir Reginald to be impeccably polite and attentive, which is a key part of the personality development and character story criteria for judging. He is meticulously careful, as you can see by the way he is holding those two rare and important blossoms. These are his Aura Blossoms, and that attentive nature I gave him is what ensures he is never reckless with them.
For the outfit and creative transformation, I cleverly used the mantis's natural shapes to inspire his accessories and outfit. The elegant body shape from the reference image was perfect for a gentleman's long coat, giving him that classic, dignified look of an refined garden dweller in a gentleman's suit. To further define his personality, I transformed the original mantis's head structure into a sophisticated bucket hat, providing both protection from the weather and polished style.
The Function of the Blossoms
You can see how I included the two original purple flowers held with utmost care. As the Travelling Bloom Curator, Sir Reginald does not just carry them; they are his curating tools. These are magically preserved Aura Blossoms, whose petals he presents to deserving garden dwellers as small tokens of beauty. The meticulously careful way he holds them truly defines his dedicated nature.
Developing the personality of this new mantis character and character story was so fun I am just so happy with how he turned out. I envision him as the kind of garden visitor who always wipes his little boots before entering a path, and who will spend hours finding just the right petal to present to a stressed-out bumblebee curator. My best effort went into make making this marker drawing clever and refined, and I am just glad it showcases the best effort required by the judging criteria.
The final result has that clean and flat aesthetic that I am always striving to perfect. The bold lines define every fold of his coat, and the layering of the markers brings out the vibrant color, making him feel both charming and truly dignified
I just have to ask, do you think Sir Reginald’s bucket hat ever gets caught on a thorny stem, and how polite do you think he is about it?
