Good day my friends here on the drawaday community.
This is the sketch I made as my entry for the SketchQuest contest of , where the challenge is to take a bug from the "Let Us Draw Bugs" challenge of
and evolve it. I decided to take my previous little guy, Tiny Titan, and see what would happen if he really leaned into that mysterious spotlight vibe.
I am calling this evolved version The Lunar Sentinel. I was thinking about how a shy beetle might turn into something a bit more formidable and protective. The loudest shape this time was definitely that tough, intricate face, it almost looks like an owl or a mask now, doesn't it?
This is the original tiny titan unevolved version just for comparison. Basically looking just the same but bigger with massive appendages. The antennae are now gone they formed part of his lashes. Tiny titan is shy and never confident look at his stance. I want to go the opposite of that when he is evovled.
I wanted the mood to stay dark and clean, but with a lot more weight. He is not just a beetle anymore; he has evolved these heavy, spiked plates and those massive, staring eyes to keep watch in the dark. The lines are loose on purpose and I kept that high contrast black background I've been loving lately; not everything needs to be perfect; I want the thinking process to show in it. I stayed with the black and white theme because it makes all those new, sharp details and armor plates feel even more intense.
Process was quick, fun, and easy, just letting the shapes guide . I didn't want to overthink the evolution, I just wanted him to feel stronger.
This is the first attempt to evolve my tiny titan. Notice there is a proboscis initially but I immediately got rid of it. Still looking a little shy and soft
It is looking more spiky and tough at this stage of the drawing and I like it. Gave it more horns and scales after losing the pair of antennae. I think those are too thin and this evolved version do not need them. It looks like a pupa of some kind but already looking massive and dangerous.
Here the titan has already evolved. Gained more mass and the scales, appedages and horns took form. I want the eyes to be bigger and scary. The long lashes which came from his antennae are looking rather thorny and hard. Now he has a pair of teeth showing like pincers. At this stage of the drawing I am torn whether to discard the legs or not and what about the size and look of each? In the end I kept all the legs but increased their sizes. Gave him a pair of strong upper forearms for digging in the ground and for combat too. The wings which are the white blank part stayed and later on added some veining on them. Kept it black and white like the original unevolved version.
That is how I go about my design process: I vreate, go with the flow, almost no going back to edit, keep what is working and learn from my mistakes. It is pretty cool to see how a simple scribble can turn into something so detailed to the point of not wanting stop. Have you guys ever looked at an old drawing and wondered what it would look like if it just kept growing?
I am encouraging you guys to visit the draw a day community and read about the two drawing challenges and give it your best shot. Draw a bug and then evolve it. Sounds interesting enough? I bet
