I almost skipped ASEAN Hive Challenge this week since I lacked a DIY project and had no immediate need for one. Scanning my surroundings at home, there were no items in need of repair. However, as I surveyed my cluttered workspace, my attention was drawn to this ugly wall calendar.
Despite it being the third week of January, I realized I still didn't have a 2024 desk calendar in my home. Traditionally, I always made it a point to buy a standing desk calendar before the start of each new year. Unfortunately, that didn't happen this year due to my recent battle with Covid, which left me under quarantine for a week. By the time I could leave the house to purchase one, all the desk calendars were already sold out. I didn't bother to look elsewhere though, assuming I could easily print one at home.
I don't remember when I received this calendar; it might have been a complimentary gift from a hardware shop during a purchase. I put it aside because I have nowhere to hang it and since I'm not going to use it I plan to recycle the paper for another purpose.
However, a sudden idea struck me. Instead of discarding it, why not repurpose the calendar to create a standing desk calendar, eliminating the need to buy one? I could save some money! Brilliant idea!
I found a big piece of corrugated cardboard in my pile of boxes and papers meant for recycling. It's just what I need for making my standing desk calendar. To make it look better, I'll cover the stand with some leftover Christmas gift wrapping papers I still have. This way, it won't look so ugly 😅.
To kick off the project, I took off the back cover of the calendar. I'll use it as a guide to figure out how big the stand should be. It seems like someone used this calendar as a base to store some containers 🤦♀
I measured the stand using the back cover as a guide, making sure it was a bit larger than the calendar with a 1 cm margin all around. After that, I cut the cardboard and folded it according to the measurements.
Next, I measured the base of the stand, ensuring it was 12 cm wide and 28.5 cm long.
At first, I thought about gluing the top of the calendar to the stand, but I changed my mind. Instead, I decided to use a metal clip to secure the calendar. I allocated an extra 3 cm at the top of the stand to serve as the space for attaching the clip.
After deciding on the measurements, I proceeded to cut the cardboard accordingly.
Here's how the finished desk calendar will look! But we still need to cover it to make it look pretty.
I cut the wrapping paper and then glued it onto the cardboard.
Next, I affixed the top of the stand using cellophane tape, being careful to leave the 3 cm at the top untouched for attaching the clip.
Ta da! Here's my finished DIY standing desk calendar!
I placed it on top of a cabinet so the whole family could see it!
What do you think of my DIY calendar?
