This week, ASEAN Hive Community Challenge #19 takes the theme “What’s Your Favorite Movie?”
As you know, many people like and love watching movies. Watching movies is one of the activities that can make us happier, relieve stress and boredom in the routines in this life, especially when the movie has an interesting story and is played by our favorite actors and actresses. Everyone has different tastes in the genre of movies they watch and I'm sure that everyone will have a movie that impresses him and will make that movie he will always remember.
My Favorite Movie Right Now
I also have several favorite movies that I can tell you, from Hollywood movies, Korean movies, Japanese movies and also Indonesian movies. However, I will choose one Indonesian Movie that impressed me and became my favorite movie. The Indonesian movie is entitled Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap.
Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is a 2022 Indonesian family drama film. The film was written and directed by Bene Dion Rajagukguk, a director and screenwriter from the Stand Up Comedian background. Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap (in English : Horrible and Delicous) is a term that is often used to describe conditions or situations that are horrible but exciting or delicious. The film received a positive response from the Indonesian people and was a huge success by gaining 2.8 million viewers.
Synopsis
This movie tells the story of parents who come from the Batak ethnic group. Pak Domu, the father (played by Arswendy B.S Nasution) and Mak Domu, the mother (played by Tika Panggabean) who live with their daughter, Sarma (played by Gita Butar-Butar) on the edge of Lake Toba. Pak Domu and Mak Domu really want their three sons Domu (played by Boris T. Manulang), Gabe (played by Lolox), and Sahat (played by Indra Jegel) who are overseas and out of town to return home to attend traditional events. sacred. The three boys were reluctant to return home because they had problems and differences in principle with their father. Finally, Pak Domu and Mak Domu made a tactic by pretending to be divorced for their children to go home and put them in a situation and moment that was horrific but also exciting and thrilling.
My reason
Horror Sedap is a movie that is very close to me, this movie raises Bataknese culture as the main and most accurate premise, usually elements of Batak culture in Indonesian movies are only used as a patch or complement in movies. As a Batak person, I feel very proud of this movie. Names of characters, accents, traditional ceremonies, traditions, local jokes and also popular Bataknese cuisine appear in the scenes and narration in this movie. Watching this movie, makes many people feel like going home and miss their family.
Apart from being local pride reasons, Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap has the best way to touch human emotions and I feel that way. As we know, the relationship between family members is not always harmonious. The conflict of this film is about how the three boys disobey their father's orders.
Domu, the eldest child, has a problem with his love relationship which is not approved because the woman he chooses is of different ethnicity and religion. Gabe, the second child has a problem because his work as a comedian is not approved, because Gabe is a law graduate and his father wants him to work as a prosecutor or judge. It is different about Sahat the last child, who according to Bataknese culture the last son will inherit the house and must stay at home to take care of his parents, Sahat prefers to stay helping farmers in disadvantaged villages on Java Island.
The complexity of the problem between the different wishes of parents and children often occurs. The conflict is not only for bataknese people but everyone in this world. Moreover, for Asian society the role of the father is very crucial and patriarchal culture emphasizes it. It is very difficult for children to have different opinions or discuss with their parents, so that everyone who has problems with their parents will relate to this movie.
This movie can be said to be a new movie but it was very memorable for me. Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap is the first movie that made me cry in the cinema. Remember, sobbing, not just tears in your eyes. Very emotional conflicts, good acting and quality scenarios make this movie a masterpiece for me.
As a new and fresh Indonesian Movie, Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap tries to appear brave and is very high-risk, I watched the primary time of this film for fear that this film would not sell well and would quickly go down the screen in theaters. As it turned out, this film with local culture won a big gamble.
Keep in mind, Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap does not use the formula for Indonesian blockbusters. The 10 best-selling movies in Indonesia are usually horror, comedy, romance and these movies always use class A actors and actresses. In addition, usually Indonesian films are too Jakarta centric, where each story and premise uses a point of view from Jakarta instead of Indonesian point of view.
According to information from the producer, the plan is that this movie will also air in several countries in Southeast Asia and will also air on OTPs such as Netflix or Hotstar. Hopefully the plan is realized so that everyone can make peace with his family.
