For the most part we focus on dogs at Krabi Animal Welfare but this isn't because we don't care about cats or other animals. The reason is that cats generally speaking are far better at looking after themselves in the urban wild than dogs are and they depend on people for food and shelter a lot less. Most of the time when cats are in trouble they will crawl away somewhere private because that is just the way that cats are.
These kittens were motherless and unfortunately we don't have any idea what happened to the mum.
They were discovered by a neighbor with the constant mewing and we don't know how long mom has been gone but it may have been a while. They are covered in a wide range of parasites and are already showing some rather advanced mange. They are malnourished and have blood parasites as well.
The odd thing about these cats is that they don't appear to be your run-of-the-mill alley cat. Many cats in Thailand have no tails or "snub tails" and these are the cats that are normally discarded by their human caretakers. These cats on the other hand, all have tails and bright colorful eyes which is very popular among cat lovers.
This could be good news mixed with bad news. If they were abandoned it just shows more human cruelty that exists here in people's attitudes towards pets because they could have simply put up a post or let us or another organization know of their existence and we probably wouldn't have had much trouble finding them homes. If they were not abandoned I suppose that is better, because once we fix them up and their hair grows back - which it tends to with mange - we will almost certainly be able to find them homes rather rapidly.
In the meantime it is quite tragic to see the state they are in. Please, if you ever discover cats that have been abandoned, if you can't care for them yourself let an agency like ours know about their existence. There are thousands of organizations all over the world that are dedicated to helping animals even if you can't do it yourself.
For the people that are thinking of abandoning unwanted pets, please consider contacting an animal rescue operation. At ours, if someone contacts us about precisely this, there is no judgement on our part and we will not berate anyone that can't look after an animal. Our organization and many others like ours are here to help and we will do whatever we can to insure that cats and dogs at least get a fighting chance at a better life.
