It seems as though we are always running around from this temple to that temple, from this village to that village, and when we do this it sometimes feels good because we can see that we are definitely making a difference in certain areas. Other areas though, without the help of the community it just isn't likely that we are going to be able to help given the small scale of our operation and the fact that we are about a week away from bankruptcy at any given point in time.
We also get a bit frustrated when people contact us about stray dogs in their neighborhood and treat us as though we are animal control and they didn't even try to help that animal themselves.
I would love to help every single person that calls if we had unlimited funds and resources. We would establish a massive plot of land where all the dogs of Krabi could live in luxury! But that isn't the way things are and some days it gets to be a bit tough. Sooooo I try to enjoy the moments of the love we get from the dogs that we help.
These two little lovelies are unaware of the fact that I tricked them into taking medication. ssssshhh! Don't tell them!
They aren't the only ones because when we noticed that a certain area where there are a dozen or so dogs had a breakout of parasites there is really only one way forward and that is to treat everyone in the pack. We are not massively familiar with this area so we can't be sure that we got all of the dogs and this is one of those areas where the locals aren't terribly helpful either. The good news is that you only need to get most of the dogs in order to starve off the flea, tick, and mange issue. Without a source of food (the dogs) the parasites die out.
The pups don't know and I don't think they care that their delicious treat of wet dog food puree was mixed with medication that is going to make them less itchy.
Even though the tablets are designed to be medicine disguised as a treat we like to play it safe and hide the treat under a bunch of meaty goodness. These things are not expensive but they also aren't free and anyone that has ever had a dog is aware of how skilled dogs are at working their way around medication while still managing to eat the ham. We have kind of worked out a system that ensures that everyone gets their medicine.
It consists of a spoonfull of wet dog food that has their mouths watering with the medication hidden in between. These are mostly puppies, some of the more recent ones that we were unaware there was a non-sterilized female in our midst, so they will eat almost anything. But we do have several people around to make sure that one dog does't get 5 doses while the others get none at all.
This sort of anti-parasite will work on any dog that eats it for 3 months or more. The idea here is not just to keep these dogs parasite free for 3 months though. The idea is to starve off the fleas and other parasites so that they die off or move elsewhere because as far as the parasites are concerned, the "food source" IE, the dogs, their blood is now poisonous.
I don't understand how this medication works but I am just really happy that it does work.
I do enjoy the appreciation that the dogs show us for our efforts, now if the people in the community that have these dogs in it would just help out a little bit, things would be a lot better off.
