During Covid we were in financial dire straits with funding. At several points we were dipping into our own savings and salaries from other jobs in order to just keep the lights on and work with a skeleton crew. For many months nobody took a salary at all and we were turning up to work knowing that we were actually paying to be there. Gas in the trucks, paying the electric bill, providing food and medicine for the dogs and cats, and tending to the animals we have in our complex was all done with our own pocket money. We were very concerned during that time because while we were happy to dig deep during that time, we were concerned that it was not something that we would be able to keep up for very long.
Those were very dark times that I hope we never return to.
Lately though, with the uptick in tourism and also the increased amounts of donations that we are seeing at our U.K. locations, we are in the black for the first time in several years. Most of this was because of the complete elimination of tourism because of Thailand locking down the country with Covid restrictions. A great deal of our donations come in the form of people that are actually visiting Krabi and have heard of us, or they hear about us once they are here. We get a lot of volunteer help from people that are doing their vacations in a way to help others while they are there and we are very grateful for this.
During the dark days of Covid we had to do things that we hope to never have to do again and that was to form a "triage" of sorts where there were animals that needed our help, but we had to focus on the ones that needed it the most and ignore the others. We simply didn't have enough manpower and if we started putting food out in "the field" we would have to do it at the expense of stealing food from the animals that we currently have in out complex. It is not a nice situation to find yourself in and it was very depressing for all of us animal lovers here at Krabi Animal Welfare.
It almost seems like there was a great reset because we are seeing more donations now than we did before 2020 and we have so many people contacting us to volunteer that we have actually had to turn some people away. We do this is the kindest manner possible but the fact of the matter is that we are still quite a small operation and there is only so much to be done in a day. Plus, believe it or not, it can actually be a bit detrimental to the animals that are at our complex if we have a ton of strangers coming by all the time as if it was a zoo.
These times make us very happy though because for the first time in years we don't have to worry about rationing our treats and kibbles, and the animals are being fed as much as they need to. In fact, we actually have a surplus of food in our warehouse and this is a notion that seemed impossible around 3 years ago. Now we liberally hand out treats to any animal anywhere. If you worked in this industry for as long as I have you would understand how much joy this little thing brings to you.
So here's a special shout out to all the people that have helped us in the past 6 months: It is YOU that made this possible and now we are actually in a position to perhaps expand our operations into another temple area in Krabi. We've been hoping to do this for a long time and now we finally have the resources to do so. Every little bit helps!
