Have a blessed day everyone. I am Maeve, an English teacher to Spanish and Koreans. I am also a writer and editor for different online publications.
*Joining Hive is probably akin to going back to my first love, which is really writing. I was a writer even before I became a teacher.
I wrote for the Manila Bulletin right after I graduated from the university. It was a good experience, I must say, but I had to pursue other dreams such as newscasting. *
My career, as I would put it, was a roller coaster ride. Back then, I would go to different media outlets and apply for a position even without strong connections. I came as I am, with only my skills and confidence in hand.
I almost landed a newscasting job, but then again, strong connections were a must. And then the inevitable happened. They chose another candidate with affiliations with the higher ups. It was hard to move forward knowing that I was just inches away from my dream. But life is like that, IT WAS UNFAIR, and STILL IS.
*This is when I decided to venture into teaching. I’ve been doing this for more than 8 years now, and I’m continuing to love every bit of it. Teaching became my venue to moving forward from different career disappointments I had in the past. *
What I like most about teaching is not just the fact that I’m able to impart knowledge to my students, but also in knowing that they have someone like me whom they can share their ups and downs with. I have students for years now who have also become more like a family to me. I’ve seen them grow from a high school kid to a young adult all geared up to taking the next chapter of their lives. This usually tears me up. Even seeing them transition – from singlehood to married life.
Oh, the joy of being a teacher, of being a part of their lives.
*The hustle all started from this humble home-office setup, a witness to all the laughter, joy, and even moments of sadness, and sometimes burnout. Everything all rolled into one. *
My hobbies, you ask? I love to eat good food surrounded by my favorite people.
Also, I love to travel and go outdoors.
Good thing I am onboarded by Ms. . We met through FB and she generously shared her knowledge about Hive. It’s like learning from a mentor. I’ve been really wanting to have one because I believe that learning is a never-ending process. This is why I’m very grateful to her.
*As I see it now, life is not really a bed of roses. It’s not always sunshine and rainbows. It’s about being grateful of the little things, the mundane, the ordinary. If I would have to choose which job is more rewarding, I’d say being a teacher.
It’s now that I understand that the rejections were all part of a bigger purpose. Today, I’m happy changing lives of many students from all around the world. *
I still have a lot of good reads to share on this page and I hope you journey with me as I unfold them one by one. Just like these flowers and trees, I will continue to thrive until it’s my time to shine once again.
