About a month ago we encountered the most severe injury of any animal we have ever rescued here in Krabi. This dog, apparently from a fight with another dog, had a massive wound on his neck and when we found him the wound was still wet with blood and the gash on his neck was massive. If the wounds themselves did not kill him, the infection and infestation of parasites that were certain to follow certainly would have.
Thankfully, we found him early, got hi stitched up and cleaned, and are proud to announce that he has been re-introduced to his environment where we found.
Now I wish I could say that he was grateful for all of this, but he remains very stand-offish when it comes to humans, and we needed to be very careful with him while he was in our care. He has no doubt had a life of suffering that has lead him to be very untrusting of humans, and unfortunately this is quite common with street dogs not just in Krabi, but all over Thailand.
This is what he looked like when we found him, and it is by far the most terrible wounds that I have seen on any animal that has been in our care in the several years that I have been doing this. We honestly didn't expect him to live but we had to try anyway and thanks to our friends at Bangkok Krabi Animal Hospital we were able to save his life, get him stitched up (a lot of stitches) and give him time to heal in our complex.
Hopefully he can manage to not get into more fights but he did seem quite happy to return to where we picked him up and got right back to talking to his pals that also live there.
I sincerely hope that we do not see this guy back here again in the future and hopefully he learned his lesson from the first encounter with whatever animal did this to him in the first place. This is yet another unfortunate aspect of life on the streets of Krabi and the war for territory and food is only becoming more extreme as markets are still heavily restricted and this is where a lot of these animals would get their food handouts.
In the meantime this is a huge victory for us here at Krabi Animal Welfare and it is a milestone that we hoped we would never have to face, but are pleased that we were able to get past it.
Almost good as new
I want to once again encourage everyone out there to adopt pets and not buy them and also to volunteer your time and / or money to an animal rescue or animal shelter near you.
