A symbol of my city's rich and diverse cultural identity
My city is actually nicknamed as the City of Heroes, that’s because many important historical events took place here. Furthermore, Surabaya is also known as the center for arts and culture in East Java. Today I want to write about this building called Cak durasim, a home for various traditional and contemporary art performances.
Cak Durasim Building is also known as Taman Budaya (cultural park). Don’t think of “park” as a large field full of grass and plants or something similar. Instead, the area of this building actually has several rooms with different functions. The name “Cak Durasim” is taken from the legendary ludruk artist from Surabaya, Durasim Gondoredjo, who is known for his dedication to preserving and developing traditional East Javanese arts.
I’m pretty sure I visited this building when I was in junior high school because this week when I attended an event at Cak Durasim, it just felt like dejavu, but not really lol. Because it felt like I had seen some of these traditional javanese elements around the area, but I can’t even remember what activity I possibly have been doing in this building.
However, I remember since I was in junior high school when I first heard about Cak Durasim, this building functioned as a cultural park, a center for various arts and cultural activities in Surabaya.
This article states that, historically, this building represents the local government's effort to support and preserve traditional arts in the face of the increasing influence of modernization.
With adequate facilities, this building is often used for theater, dance, music dan art exhibitions. This building can be considered a vital creative hub for the arts community in Surabaya.
The architecture blends classic and modern features. The rooms are quite simple, but they add traditional Javanese touches to every corner. I think the main area is this traditional Javanese open-air pavilion-like structure, which we called Pendopo. This specific area can be rented for various events, including wedding ceremonies. This venue is perfect for those who want to celebrate their wedding with a traditional Javanese concept.
This place also serves as a meeting place for artists from various fields and frequently hosts various arts events and festivals. Cak Durasim Building's presence as a cultural park symbolizes Surabaya's rich and diverse cultural identity and reflects its commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and developing the arts.
That's all for today, thanks for reading as always! :) how about you guys, is there this kind of building in your city?
