This year, I didn’t go home for Eid because I was travelling abroad first, and only afterwards did I return to my mother’s house in Pekalongan. Unfortunately, by the time I got home, my eldest nephew had already returned to his boarding school and wasn’t allowed visitors yet. Meanwhile, at home there was still the youngest one, Rendra, whose dimples resemble mine.
That day the sun was really beating down and all day long we felt like we were constantly sweating and feeling hot and sticky, so, that late afternoon, Rendra invited me for an ice cream date at the Mixue ice cream parlour. Of course, without a second thought, I immediately agreed and set off straight away to the location, which was about ten kilometres away.
I wasn’t just with Rendra, but also with my older sister, who is Rendra’s mother. We ordered three items as soon as we arrived: a kiwi sundae, a mango sundae, and I had a drink topped with kiwi fruit and nata de coco. When I placed my order, there were still about four people ahead of me in the queue, so I sat down and watched people coming and going from the shop. This ice cream parlour is never short of customers. And why wouldn’t it be, given how delicious and affordable it is?
In less than ten minutes, my order was ready, and I went up to the second floor because Rendra was already waiting there for his ice cream to arrive. Upstairs, the seating area is quite spacious, and that evening only a few seats were empty; the rest were already taken.
Rendra chose the long sofa at the far end; I don’t know why he likes corners, hihihi.
While enjoying his chosen ice cream, Rendra was a bit taken aback because the kiwi tasted very sour to him. Oh my goodness! Of course, Ren! That’s the Hujai kiwi—sour and fresh. Meanwhile, as someone who absolutely loves kiwi, I felt my drink order was spot on. Ha ha ha
Occasionally, Rendra would take a bite of his mum’s ice cream, which had a milder flavour—mango. That evening, we finished our ice cream amidst the weather that remained sweltering. At least the ice cream provided some temporary refreshment for us. That was my ice cream date with Rendra; see you in the next story.
Hi, I am the child of the universe, I like to read books with various genres. I was born in the city of batik but can't draw batik yet. I want to be a novelist, but my works are only short poems that are included in anthology books.
