Hello everyone, and especially the SurfHive Community! It's Jasper, the musical-surfer dad from Cape Town in South Africa.
This weekend was fully booked and I thought I was not going to be able to surf at all... but I actually landed up going twice!
SATURDAY
I was on Daddy duty all morning while my wife did a course, and then planned to join
and
for their son's birthday party and a bit of a musical jam around their braai (barbeque fire) in the evening.
In that gap, I wanted to go to the hardware store... and realized that would take me half way to the nearest beach, so why not squeeze 30 minutes of water time in?
The nearest beach to my house is one of the best places in the world to learn to surf... the sheltered False Bay and the very flat sandy bottom makes for long, gentle small waves like this!
It gave me a chance to ride my 7'6 mini-mal which is not something I do often compared to shortboards (it didn't even come on my recent holiday). I was able to practice moving towards the nose on a couple of tiny waves...
Groups of beginners would only be catching the wave closer to shore when I am more or less finished with it... hahaha!
SUNDAY
This time I had a 2 year old birthday party in the morning and a family photoshoot planned for the afternoon... hahaha! (How my life has changed!!)
This time I knew I had a spare hour, and even invited my friend Spike along!
This time the waves were slightly bigger! Maybe 6 inches more! Hahaha
Big enough for me to do close-out turns as well as trying to run up to the nose! Hey, this is fun, perhaps I should ride the poor mini-mal more often!
This guy was having a blast - A Stand-up Paddleboarder... with a foil! Does he even need a wave at all? Hahaha!
So, I am still getting used to being a dad and having less free time on the weekends, but I think it is teaching me to grab the odd opportunity to have a splash and get some fresh air when I can!
It was really nice to have some sun as well! This winter has been a cold one (by Cape Town standards) so far!
Goodbye for now!
