In the past, surfing in general was a male-dominated sport. Few women caught waves and it was even harder to see a girl bodysurfing. But Isabelle de Loys and her twin sister Marie-Claude broke the mold and began to stand out.
From the waves of Leme beach to the world! Yes, there were so many championships and titles won that recognition came, and the two started to be called “Leme mermaids”, “bodysurf twins” and many other nicknames.

However, the fact is that they were born in Switzerland in 1967, in a city called Lausanne, a place without a beach. With her Brazilian mother and Swiss father, the family moved to Leme, in Rio de Janeiro, when the girls were 5 years old. At the age of 8, they fell in love with bodysurfing and haven't stopped since.
From Leme beach to the world
Both sisters magnificently represented Brazil in the international bodysurf championships for 20 years. And, recently, I was able to talk to Isabelle about her career in the sport, in order to analyze what the bodysurf scene was like in past decades and how we are now.
Basically, Isabelle participated in her first bodysurfing championship at Forte São João, in Urca (Rio de Janeiro), when she was 14 years old. As she didn't have money to pay for championship registrations, she soon went looking for sponsors. Its first sponsor was the VanSport store and the partnership that began in 1984 lasted 2 years.
Then, in her debut in the world championship on the beach in Oceanside (California), Isabelle took 2nd place on the podium and this caused a huge impact in the newspapers, radio and TV at the time. This was because it was also the first time that a Latin American country participated in the sport's world championship.

To reach the final and win the title of world runner-up, she had to compete in 4 heats with girls who already knew the waves, since most of them were local to California. With this result, a world opened up in front of Isabelle de Loys, who soon found herself being sponsored by Coppertone, as well as the former VASP airline and small surf shops.
So, traveling the world looking for waves and titles became less complicated, which doesn't mean it was easy. I say this because, despite everything, bodysurf continues to be seen as the “poor cousin of surfing”, that is, the offer of sponsorship and the professionalization of athletes in the sport is still very small.

There is no doubt that the Loys sisters' achievements in expanding bodysurfing in Brazil and around the world were extremely important. When did large media outlets imagine giving so much visibility to bodysurfing, especially at a time when surfing dominated the scene and bodyboarding was strong?
Many years ago I remember seeing the cover of a Rio newspaper, with a photo of the sisters at Leme. A handsurfing friend from Alagoas told part of the story of the twins, considered references in the sport for everything they did and achieved.
And several times the sisters took turns on the podium; sometimes Isabelle is in first place and Marie-Claude in second, sometimes she is in first place and Isabelle is second.
Two-time world bodysurf champion
More precisely in 1995, Isabelle won the title of world champion and in 1997 came her second title. Furthermore, she participated in the American championships, where she became three-time American champion in 1991, 1995 and 1998.
“I think that we, bodysurfers, have a good soul because we are so close to the sea, the wave… we have such great harmony with nature. And all of this made me a dedicated person involved with the environment. After all, it's not just about catching waves. It's not just about bodysurfing. I try to show people that we can change this dark path we are taking”, says Isabelle.

Today Isabelle continues to bodysurf and swim in the sea. She dedicates herself to environmentalist architecture, the revitalization of green areas in Rio and the protection of the oceans, purposes that were brought to her by sport.

No passado, o surf de modo geral, era um esporte dominado por homens. Poucas mulheres pegavam onda e mais difícil ainda era ver uma garota praticando bodysurf. Mas Isabelle de Loys e sua irmã gêmea Marie-Claude quebraram o padrão e começaram a se destacar.
Das ondas da praia do Leme para o mundo! Sim, foram tantos campeonatos e títulos conquistados que o reconhecimento veio, e as duas passaram a ser chamadas de “sereias do Leme”, “gêmeas do bodysurf” e tantos outros apelidos.

Porém, o fato é que elas nasceram na Suíça em 1967, em uma cidade chamada Lausanne, lugar sem praia. Com a mãe brasileira e o pai suíço, a família se mudou para o Leme, no Rio de Janeiro, quando as meninas tinham 5 anos de idade. Aos 8 anos elas se apaixonaram pelo bodysurf e não pararam mais.
Da praia do Leme para o mundo
Ambas irmãs representaram magnificamente o Brasil nos campeonatos internacionais de bodysurf durante 20 anos. E, recentemente, pude conversar com Isabelle à respeito de sua trajetória no esporte, a fim de analisar como era o cenário do bodysurf nas décadas passadas e como estamos agora.
Basicamente, Isabelle participou do seu primeiro campeonato de bodysurf no Forte São João, na Urca (Rio de Janeiro), quando tinha 14 anos de idade. Como não tinha dinheiro para pagar as inscrições dos campeonatos, logo foi em busca de patrocinadores. Seu primeiro patrocinador foi a loja VanSport e a parceria que iniciou em 1984 durou 2 anos.
Em seguida, na sua estreia em campeonato mundial na praia de Oceanside (Califórnia), Isabelle conquistou o 2º lugar no pódio e isso causou uma grande repercussão nos jornais, rádio e TV na época. Isso porque aquela tinha sido a primeira vez também que um país da América Latina participava do campeonato mundial da modalidade.

Para chegar à final e conquistar o título de vice-campeã mundial, ela precisou competir 4 baterias com meninas que já conheciam as ondas, uma vez que boa parte delas eram locais da Califórnia. Com esse resultado, um mundo se abriu à frente de Isabelle de Loys, que logo se viu sendo patrocinada pela Coppertone, além da antiga companhia aérea VASP e pequenas lojas de surf.
Assim, percorrer o mundo atrás das ondas e dos títulos se tornou algo menos complicado, o que não significa que foi fácil. Digo isso porque, apesar de tudo, o bodysurf permanece sendo apontado como o “primo pobre do surf”, ou seja, a oferta de patrocínios e a profissionalização de atletas do esporte ainda é muito pequena.

Não há dúvidas de que os feitos das irmãs de Loys para a expansão do bodysurf no Brasil e no mundo foi de extrema importância. Quando se imaginou grandes veículos de comunicação dando tanta visibilidade ao bodysurf, ainda mais na época que o surf dominava o cenário e o bodyboarding figurava forte?
Há muitos anos me recordo de ter visto a capa de um jornal carioca, com a foto das irmãs no Leme. Um amigo adepto do handsurf de Alagoas contou parte da história das gêmeas, tidas como referências no esporte por tudo que fizeram e conquistaram.
E por diversas vezes as irmãs revezaram o pódio; ora Isabelle em primeiro lugar e Marie-Claude em segundo, ora esta em primeiro e Isabelle em segundo.
Bicampeã mundial de bodysurf
Mais precisamente no ano de 1995, Isabelle conquistou o título de campeã mundial e em 1997 veio o bicampeonato. Além disso, participou dos campeonatos americanos, onde sagrou-se tricampeã americana em 1991, 1995 e 1998.
“Eu acho que nós, bodysurfers, temos uma alma boa porque ficamos tão íntimos do mar, da onda… temos uma harmonia tão grande com a natureza. E isso tudo me fez ser uma pessoa dedicada e envolvida com o meio ambiente. Afinal, não é apenas sobre pegar ondas. Não é apenas sobre bodysurf. Eu tento mostrar para as pessoas que a gente pode mudar esse caminho sombrio que estamos percorrendo”, conta Isabelle.

Hoje Isabelle continua pegando onda de bodysurf e pratica natação no mar. Dedica-se a arquitetura ambientalista, a revitalização de áreas verdes no Rio e à proteção dos oceanos, propósitos que lhe foram proporcionados pelo esporte.
