Every Journey needs to start with a single step, this is mine
Now there are only 806 steps to go before the finished project is here. This is not the normal way these things start, in official Lego land it always seems to be be the black square - the start of a ladder chassis that kicks things of but we are in the wild wild west with this thing, in the dark web of the Lego. These three pieces give no hint of what is to come.
For those following along I've decided to build a Le Mans car and I've given myself 4 days to do it, but the end of Easter Monday this pile of pieces will all be connected up.
The journey so far:
The Intro
Now some quick maths tells me that 800 odd steps and four days means that I need to be doing close enough to 200 steps a day - which seems both doable but also a little daunting, mainly because there are other things to do as well.
Okay so I've cheated a little. I go a head start last night, so as I write this sentence it's 7.30am on Good Friday morning and I'm 100 steps in already.
So far it's what I would have expected the 'engine' this is a little bit of the problem with technic builds, they tend to always start with the most complicated part, it's all gears, and interlocking cogs.
This is it after step 50, the orange piece in the middle is likely the most important, and this is changing the gears so I've been extra careful to line it up probably.
and again at the end of last night at step 100 - One of the biggest surprises is the size of this thing, I have a sneaking suspicion this is going to end up pretty big.
As we come up on stop 150 there are two pleasing things happening. Firstly, and prehaps most importantly my careful dismantling of the Forklift and categorizing of pieces is working well, the 'where the hell is that piece' searching is being kept to a minimum. Also the car is strating to look like a car, the last 10 or so steps have been putting the wheel geometry on, including springed suspension, trailing arms, and pretend brake pads which I like a look.
I've breezed past 200 and stopping now for the afternoon at step 235. There are two things that I've realised in this batch of steps. Firstly you need to be mindful of stickers. This is only a issue on rebuilds. Parts have stickers on them in the original model and normally you don't want to show them in the rebuild so you have to think about when you deploy them - I try to bury them deep inside the model where you won't see them - I don't need the land rover logos and hi lo selectors on my final race car.
Also my sneaking suspicion that this was going to be big is coming true - this thing just keeps getting bigger and bigger. I think the full length is maybe 40-45cm. The bulk of this will be the engine sitting behind the driver, what I though where the front wheels are actually the back.
Anyway it's 3.15pm and that is likely me done for the day, I've got to go watch some football. And by that I mean Australian Rules Football - My team North Melbourne are playing the Western Bulldogs and, well it's unlikely to go well, we are in a 'rebuilding' stage. Having said that the corresponding game last year saw us lose by about a 120 points, so anything we serve up today should be better than that.
The game starts at 4.20pm so by the time I get home it'll be 7.30ish so maybe I might build some more then, maybe not, I guess we will find out later,
Okay so I'm home from the Football and... we lost, by about 60 points, so you know that's an improvement - at this rate 2024 is really going to by our year.
Anyway - too tired to build any more so I'm going to go drink beer, eat cheese and watch Risky Business.
