Hi fellow Outdoorsmen,
Today I'm here with a fun hike the little man and I partook in near Boston!
Blue Hills Hike
One of the things that's a little tricky sometimes when you're near the big city is finding places that you can go that aren't too far away but give you some awesome outdoor exposure. Boston has some good green space for sure but there is still some left to be desired. Thankfully there is an area like the Blue Hills, fairly close to Boston but preserved land that is undeveloped so you can get out there for a few miles of a hike when you want. We did just that!
This was my second time ever being here but first time as an adult that I could actually remember what we were doing lol. I went here once as a kid a really long time ago but have no idea what it was like other than that it was a place to go hiking and it was near Boston. Sadly I also forget the peoples names I went with, although I think the kid I used to play with was named Jimmy. Can't confirm that though and my dad forgets as well lol. It's got some good inclines that's for sure!
What ended up being a little tricky was the melting snow during the day and at night freezing and turning it all to ice. This made for some fun conditions to hike in that's for sure! The little man sadly fell a few times so his pride got hurt a bunch that day. He didn't get physically hurt thankfully but a hit to one's pride is always tough to handle lol
Once you got above the lower hills of the area though, it started to open up and become quite enjoyable! There were long stretches of the trail that had no ice or snow on it so you could easily walk, making it a great time once we got to that point.
We did find this really awesome spot here though! It had some really nice looking small pools where the melting snow was collecting and making it's own decent river system. I wonder if during the summer and fall it's got movement like it did today, we might have to come back then and check it out to see!
Tried to get an interesting picture of the flowing water, didn't exactly pan out but you can see that for melting snow, the water is moving pretty darn quick!
The best part of the whole area is definitely the view here! It was breathtaking for sure. You could see for many miles around and I should have paid attention to which direction I was looking at here to see what is off in the distance. I don't think we are looking to the north because you usually can see some small mountains off in the distance. I think that could be about 30 or 40 miles away that I can see but just guessing on it, I don't have a firm idea there lol.
There was also ample spots for one to hang out and sit on the rocks in some of the areas which was nice. It was a beautiful day out, in the 60's! Unreal for a month like February so we loved sitting down in the sun, eating a snack and getting a drink.
On our way down the area we found another really awesome melting pool here. We had some good sunlight at this one so we sat and enjoyed it for a little while. The little man absolutely loves the sound of running water for whatever reason. I wonder if he heard it a lot while he was in my wife's stomach lol.
We did have a pretty steep and significant climb down, then back up here though! I wasn't initially going to do it since it was a lot more dangerous than I wanted to get into for the day but we were in a good rhythm so I figured let's try it and the little man did really good thankfully! We had a few hours of much needed sunlight and outdoor fun that's for sure.
I am glad that we were able to get out there and check this place out. We had a fair amount of fun checking out the new scenery and just getting some sunshine. With the really cold winter we had, it was incredibly refreshing and renewing to have a nice batch of weather smack between some cold and gloomy days.
