This is my #monomad challenge entry.
I often walk the wharf area of my city Auckland New Zealand to admire the many ships that dock there from all over the world. One day there were two ships docked next to each other that were so different to each other in design, function and age that I took these images to show the contrast. One is a Chilean Navy training ship from the late 1800's-a beautiful old sailing ship from a bygone era that is used to teach cadets maritime skills, and is used to travel the world to exhibit this immaculate old vessel and the beauty of the sailing ship era.
The other is a modern Japanese warship in New Zealand to train with our Navy in wargames at sea. It is built to hunt and destroy other vessels and is a lethal looking ship. It's function is obvious in the stark and brutal look of the conning towers that rose high above me-almost as high as the masts on the Chilean sailing ship. We don't have a large Navy in New Zealand and it was a shock to me to see such a large war machine in our Harbour. It's a sight I don't want to get used to.
