Stairway To Nowhere
Almost every summer Baška, Croatia is one of my most favorite destinations. It's my mother's father's roots, my grandfathers & grandmothers were from those areas & I was visiting it since day I was born or maybe even earlier while I still was in my mother's womb.
I would like this photo to be the entry for the challenge, but if you like some other from this post, please choose it yourself.
This year I was spending some time there again & on one of the colder days I decided to go hiking on one of many trekking paths on the surrounding hills. This time went towards the South-West side which I didn't explore much before. So, it was very interesting & attractive for me. Somehow, it was a bit easier to walk cause of less uphill than the South-East hills but still there were some steep slopes. I made myself a sandwich, filled a glass bottle with natural spring water, put my Jesus-Roman sandals on & start walking. It was mountain wind blowing that day so it wasn't too hot. Just pleasant to hike but suddenly the wind fully stopped & than the Sun was burning hot but still I went all to the point where I wanted to go. I wasn't easy.
When I finally reached my goal, I was surprised with a beautiful, pebbles beach empty, waiting only for me! But I was even more surprised with these stairways. They look so surreal! So, I needed to make few shots of them, of course.
After a swim & snorkeling, resting & enjoying the place, shooting a bit, finishing eating a sandwich, I decided to slowly go back & on the next shots you can see some of the landscaped & scenery that I was walking through. It mostly look like burnt, stone desert but you would be surprised of how many different life forms, both animals & plants live there! & would bet that in some parts of the year, it is possible to even find some species of mushrooms growing there!
In the right bottom corner a path can be noticed. it follows the natural line exactly at the bottom of the 2 hills where also the water is flowing when it's raining. I hiked it all down to the beach where the stairway was & again back up to the pass from where is was again downhill towards Baška.
This was a real adventure & in some moments I was thinking about how dangerous it might be for the inexperienced hiker. Often, in Croatia during the summer, foreign tourist go for hikes like this with flip-flops & no water so sometimes the special rescue teams are called for intervention. We, the locals already joke about that. But please, if you have no experience with hiking in Croatia, always wear boots & take a lot of water with you!
I witnessed this perfect images. I also see them as a reward for the effort I have taken. This shots are kind of blessing for a photographer & a hiker like me. Gifts of Gods.
At the most Southern point of island Krk, where I was standing while I shot this one, there was a small red metal lighthouse & the island that you can see on the shot is called Prvić. There is this stone lighthouse that I always admire from the distance. I was nearest to it that I ever was. Maybe only once I was nearer on a speedboat but without the camera. I would like to visit it physically once & maybe make a party there or a concert. I think it would be perfect!
