Back in the 1950s The American military used Bikini atoll for a series of atomic weapons test. At the time it was a new science and little was known about the long term repercussions of the tests were not known. The locals were promised they would be back on their island in a year or so but they are still waiting. In the mid 80s an attempt was made to return to the Island and a hotel and airport were built. Unfortunately the radiation still proved too high and the the projects were abandoned.
I was there a few years ago staying on a dive boat to dive some of the wrecks left by the atomic trusts and was fortunate enough to get a run ashore to look around the abandoned airport.
The hangers and maintenance sheds were just left.
The tools and equipment are still there but a bit worse for wear in the tropical environment.
Some of the vehicles were left and make great subjects for photos.
Finally Hivers the cooking facilities seem to have seen better days.
