When I visit mountains, I often think about the processes that shape them. About the immense forces of nature that cause the massive rock masses that make up our planet's crust to rise. And very often, my mind can't comprehend it, though there are days when I can imagine it. Do you can imagine this?
Kiedy odwiedzam góry, bardzo często myślę o procesach, które je kształtują. O ogromnych siłach natury, doprowadzających do wypiętrzenia się potężnych mas skalnych budujących skorupę naszej planety. I bardzo często moja głowa nie potrafi tego pojąć, choć są takie dni, kiedy jestem w stanie to sobie wyobrazić. A Wy jesteście?
Once, these rocks rested peacefully, hidden deep beneath the surface, unobtrusive, unseen. Now, they attract crowds of tourists, like me, eager to witness their vastness and power. Many of these gawkers are likely unaware of the processes that led to the formation of all tall mountains.
Niegdyś te skały spoczywały spokojnie, ukryte głęboko pod powierzchnią, nikomu nie zawadzały, nie szukały uwagi. Teraz przyciągają masę turystów, takich jak ja, chcących zobaczyć ich ogrom i potęgę. Wielu z tych gapiów jest zapewne nieświadomych procesów, które doprowadziły do powstania wszelkich wysokich gór.
It is estimated that the entire formation of the Tatra Mountains took several dozen million years, with the final stage of their uplift occurring 10–15 million years ago. The Alps and Himalayas also formed during a similar period. Although mountain formation ceased long ago, these mountains, like all others, are still being formed in some way.
Szacuje się, że całkowity proces formowania Tatr trwał kilkadziesiąt milionów lat, a ostateczny moment ich wypiętrzania miał miejsce 10–15 milionów lat temu. Glaciers are responsible for the formation of many, if not most, mountain lakes. They are responsible, among others, for the formation of the lakes in the Valley of Five Spiš Lakes.

In this never-ending transformation of the mountain landscape, photography plays a significant role. Perhaps over the course of a lifetime, the changes in the mountain landscape won't be significant enough for us to see clearly, and certainly not overnight. But someone in the distant future who sees photographs of the Tatra Mountains taken in our own time might say, "Wait, those mountains look completely different now."
W tej niekończącej się transformacji górskiego krajobrazu fotografia odgrywa sporą rolę. Być może na przestrzeni całego ludzkiego życia zmiany w górskim krajobrazie nie będą na tyle znaczące, abyśmy mogli je wyraźnie zobaczyć, a już na pewno nie z dnia na dzień. I also think this applies to all other landscapes. The world is constantly changing, and what we consider everyday travel photography can prove to be of immense historical and documentary value for future generations.
Myślę też, że tyczy się to wszelkich innych krajobrazów. Świat ciągle się zmienia i coś, co dla nas jest codzienną fotografią podróżniczą, dla przyszłych pokoleń może okazać się mieć ogromną wartość historyczną i dokumentalną.
I'd love to have access to photos of the formation of such mountains myself. I'm incredibly curious about what a time-lapse video of mountains forming would look like - photos taken every year, in the same place, at the same time. However, that's a rather abstract dream.
Sam chciałbym mieć dostęp do zdjęć z formowania się takich gór. Niezmiernie pochłania mnie ciekawość, jak wyglądałby film poklatkowy przedstawiający formujące się góry — zdjęcia wykonane co roku, w tym samym miejscu, o tej samej porze. To jednak dość abstrakcyjne marzenie.
With this post, I conclude my series on the hike to the Five Spiš Lakes Valley. A hike that taught me several very important things about planning mountain trips and how the mountains can surprise.
Tym postem kończę serię poświęconą wędrówce do Doliny Pięciu Stawów Spiskich. Wędrówce, która uświadomiła mi kilka bardzo ważnych rzeczy dotyczących planowania górskich wypraw oraz tego, jak bardzo góry potrafią zaskoczyć.
